New Glasses - white around lenses

I picked up my new glasses but didn’t notice until I got home how noticeable the white edge around the lenses was.

My prescription is -5 and -6 and the lenses were thinned to 1.67. Is this just the case now with this prescription that it will show like this?

You have a high prescription so the lenses will be thick, hence the lens edge being so obvious.
Asda opticians do lens thinning for free, ime they offer the next level thinning (1.74) for 6.5 prescriptions, so it maybe worth asking at what level prescription they start to do that. If they start at 6 your next pair may not look so thick at the edges like that? Or you could pay extra for the next level of thinning next time maybe.

It really won’t be glaringly obvious to people looking at you wearing the glasses though, but I know you must feel disappointed in them now you have noticed it. Nobody else will notice it, honestly! Flowers

Thank you, it’s all I see now that I look at them.

When I was buying them the assistant at the opticians recommended two different sizes of lenses and I went for the thinnest so I thought this would be good enough. I hadn’t realised this could happen and was more concerned about the lenses not hanging out the back of the glasses which they don’t so I was happy with that until I noticed the white edging.

I’ll definitely go for thinner next time.

I know some opticians offer a money back guarantee within a couple of weeks if you are not happy with your glasses, so might be worth asking if your opticians have this option if you are not happy with them.

Thanks they said they would call me at two weeks to check how I’m doing with them so I will ask them about it then but wasn’t sure if it’s just to be expected with this prescription.

My prescription is very high (-12) I usually ask for the edges of the lenses to be polished, the downside with that though is that you get reflections. Even thinner lenses won’t make any difference on your prescription. 1.74 would look exactly the same on your prescription as 1.6.

The lenses aren’t ‘thinned’ they are made from a material that has a higher refractive index than regular lenses. This means that to achieve the same prescription they don’t need to be the same thickness as regular lenses.

In my experience I wouldn't wait for them to call you op, they would have to be super well organised to call you 2 weeks after you took possession of them.
I mean maybe they will, but maybe they won't.
I just picked up new glasses a month ago and it's on the receipt that if I have any problems with the glasses I have two weeks to have the problem addressed.

Thank you, I better give them a call then. I’ll have to check with them.

Thank you wonderfulsmith I will speak to the opticians and see what they say.

My son has high prescription lenses that he has thinned but they don't look like that. I don't think they have done a very good job- i would definitely raise it with them.

Thank you, it’s hard to know what they are meant to look like. But my previous glasses were only 0.50 different so I was surprised they looked so different to these but then wondered if it was because my others were pink on the inside.

I will call the opticians and go from there as they weren’t cheap.

The size of frame and position of your pupil in the frame has a huge effect on the thickness. The smaller the frame the thinner the lenses.
