Twin Block Braces

Just looking for some experiences of people who've kids have these .
Ds 12 has had these fitted and while yes he does look a bit odd with them, his speech is still very indistinct? I think part of thr problem is that he is so conscious of his speech that he is speaking so little ( maybe not enough to get used to them) we are at the 2 week stage now. Anyone remember how long it took for their kids? I'm doing the tough love thing at home but secretly feel really sorry for him. I'd have hated them at his age.

I’d love to know this too. Dd has only had them a few days and she is incredibly upset about how they look and feel.

Awful isn't it.. I had literally done no research so wasn't prepared at all or had prepared him for what they looked like.

The dentist showed us a model but it’s completely different having them in your own mouth!

We have fairly recently been through this. Dd1 was 13 (year 9) and followed what the orthodontist said pretty much to the letter and ended up having them in for maybe 9 months max (they said at least 12 initially). We did let her eat breakfast without them in as she doesn't have a lot of time in the morning.

First month was the hardest. DD was conscious but did get used to them. Lots of talking at home, playing music she would sing to. Just encouraging her to talk as much as we could. I don't think she spoke much in school for the first few weeks but did eventually gain confidence. She complained a lot to me, we had some tears. I kept as positive as I could but agreed with her that they were pretty horrible, however they said she would have to have teeth removed otherwise. Fixed braces have been a breeze in comparison.

My daughter had these. First few days were horrendous and she cried so much but she did get used to them and her speech improved quickly. She is now 18 with beautiful teeth. She had them at age 13. At the time I thought she was wearing them at school but she has since confessed she took them out when there as hated how she looked with them in.

I found a few old threads on here that were really helpful for me to give support to DD and encouragement on how much they do help with the whole process. I'd really recommend searching them up.

Yes those threads were so helpful when DS had his twin blocks. One poster shared photos of her DD’s progress which were really encouraging.

DS had twin blocks for 12 months followed by fixed braces for two years and his face is transformed.

Thanks so much everyone. I know it will be worth it. His first call back is in a few weeks and if the dentist doesn't say there has been good progress. I think we'll both cry!
im going to read through those threads!

Ds1 had these for about 12 months, he only wore them at home as he hated having them in, he would put them in when he got home from school 345ish and pretty much have them in til 830 in the morning. This was enough to do what needed to be done. He is now nearing the end of fixed braces which he has found much easier than the blocks
