Where to stay for Northumberland holiday

We are planning a holiday in Northumberland next easter, but I'm not sure where would be best to stay. We'd like somewhere with a nice beach. Is Spittal nice? Or embleton? Seahouses? Thanks!

We really like Alnmouth as a base, nice beach and a pretty village. There are a selection of pubs and restaurants plus you’re in a good area for lots of interesting places to visit. Seahouses is a good base but busier and not as pretty, great beach though. Embleton is nice but a long walk to the beach. I’ve never visited spittal although we like Berwick which is very close.

Bamburgh is very pretty with a beautiful beach but it is so so busy.

We love Seahouses ... And you can walk to Bamburgh along the absolutely glorious beaches from there.

We stayed in Warkworth which was absolutely lovely. A fabulous castle, riverside walks, bustling high street, pubs, cafes and a stunning beach. We were able to catch the bus all along the coast and enjoyed visiting Alnwick, Craster and Amble.

It's such a fantastic place and the people are very friendly. Happy holidays.

Alnwick. Easy to get to everywhere and some lovely places to eat (best Indian i have ever had), the fabulous Barter Books, the castle ... and handy for everywhere. We stayed in a gorgeous air bnb called Bog Mill Cottages

Thanks! I do like a nice bookshop! We'll have to try and visit as many of these places as we can wherever we end up staying. 🙂

I don't think you can really go that wrong. It's all lovely.

Seahouses is v busy but has some useful facilities and nice in a sea sidey way.

Bamburgh is stunning and would definitely consider as you can easily walk to and along the beaches.

Embleton is a lovely village. But yes, further from the beach down a narrow lane. Has a nice kids play area and a shop and pubs.

Warkworth is a lovely place and nice beach but bit further away from Lindisfarne etc depending on what is on your to do list. Some great pubs and cafés and shops though and the castle/river walk.

Alnmouth has a good beach in walking distance from town. Fab gallery and pizza/coffee too.

Windywuss · 18/10/2025 10:36

My absolute favourite place somewhat ruined by Robson Green telling everyone though is Low Newton! Secrets out so might as well tell you 😁

Beadnell is my favourite, very peaceful. Beautiful church, very friendly locals. The beach is gorgeous, quiet and you walk quite far on it.

I’m in Warkworth now and I’d say bustling high street is a stretch - there’s a couple of shops couple of cafes. For me Amble would be a better option or Seahouses to use as a base for wider exploration as both have more restaurants and bars along with access to supermarkets etc

Windywuss · 18/10/2025 10:38

Oh and Beadnell. That's got nice harbour too.

Happydays321 · 18/10/2025 10:40

It’s just over a mile to the beach from Embleton village, after a busy day out walking a bit of an effort! Whereas in Alnmouth we’d go to the beach everyday even if we’d had a long walk in the hills.

I do love Warkworth itself but it is a bit further out from lots of places that we like to visit and I hardly dare say this but the beach can feel a little bleak if it’s not sunny. Plus it’s about half a mile from the village to the beach.

Windywuss · 18/10/2025 10:44

I agree @Happydays321 . It was summer but cold and quite bleak but beautiful in a bleak way. I am northern through and through. I like a bit of rugged and bleak beauty 😆

Windywuss · 18/10/2025 10:47

I wouldn't choose Amble. It's nice enough to visit but just a normal harbour town really with some craft shops. Bit of a beach but there's much nicer places to stay imo.

In Amble itself smaller rocky beaches but a couple of miles south or North and you get to warkworth druridge bay and cresswell and there are bigger stretches of lovely beaches. Amble has a harbour with a really popular market on a Sunday and in recent years really popular with holidayers and lots of cafes and restaurants , retail pods with quirky crafty items by the harbour etc.

@CoastalCalm The fact that I thought Warkworth has bustling high street tells you how quiet it is where I live 😂
