Do I want a Kitchen Aid Artisan Lift or Tilt?

I enjoy baking and want to get a stand mixer. I've been looking for a while and I am pretty sure I want a Kitchen Aid. However I'm not sure if I should go for a tilt model or a lift model?

My use for it would be fairly light. I make bread (not massive loafs) once or twice a week, sometimes sourdough, sometimes not. I'd do a sweet bake once a week and maybe pastry. Thinks like meringue at Christmas. It's just DH and I so it won't see massively heavy use. I also fancy the ice cream maker, shredding and pasta attachments for the Kitchen aid.

Anyone have any experience of using a kitchen aid and able to say which model lift or tilt is better? I do slightly prefer the look of the tilt but I don't want to get something that can't handle what I'd like it to do.

I hate my KitchenAid. If I was buying again I’d get a Kenwood.

@Itbeginswith My friend recently got a Kenwood and hates it, bounces and struggles with mixing and she regrets not getting another Kitchen aid, which she used to have.

I feel like the various brands have their fans and detractors.

I love my KitchenAid. When the old one died I waited under a week before getting a new one.

It had been ridiculously heavily used by the time it eventually jammed and the 'new' one has been going strong for 7 years so far and looks like new.

I've only seen the Lift type in larger capacity bowls, which I can't imagine a household of two people would need. Mine hav both been Tilt.

I have a Kitchen Aid Artisan with a head that tilts, It’s about 25yrs old now, I have no experience of the bowl lift type but, I like the easiness of just lifting the top back when needed. I find it great for pizza and bread doughs as it is weighty enough to cope with the heaviness of them. It also beats and whisks up meringues and cake mixtures easily. Having had a look at images and a quick video of the bowl lift type it doesn’t look very practical.

@PastaAllaNorma Well that is good to hear, I'd hope for a good few years out of it considering the cost! Yeah I thought that, the lift mixers have some good points more stability and slightly higher powered but I've read that if you want to do small bakes they aren't as good.

@ooohreallly I think as the bowl lifts up they are more stable but I've seen complaints that they are a pain to scrape down. I this the spiral hoot is supposed to be better and you can't get that for the tilt but it seems you haven't had any issues with dough hook on your tilt model.

ladybugpin · 18/10/2025 14:10

@Unprecedentedusername what kenwood do you have?

Mine got used for 2-3 hours a day for 6 days a week for 17 years, so I think it earned its keep.

@PastaAllaNorma Thanks, a bit concerned that build quality isn't what it used to be but hopefully it will still be good.

The enshitification of life is definitely an issue.
Clothes fabric is thinner and cheaper every year, things aren't made to be repaired. Even Club biscuits no longer have chocolate on them - it's "chocolate flavoured coating" now. Doc Martens don't last forever, laptop operating systems "aren't supported" by Apple or Microsoft after about 8 years.

Drives me bananas. (At least we still have bananas. For now)

What is there to hate about it? It’s as simple as physically possible

TeddySchnauzer · 19/10/2025 15:17

Kitchen Aid Tip - You can adjust it so that the beater/whisk/hook reaches the bottom of the bowl. (YouTube it)

Spanglybangles · 19/10/2025 15:50

I have the Kenwood Kmix stand mixer, which is brilliant and going strong for at least12 years. I couldn’t justify the extra cost for the Kitchenaid.
