Do the English feel closer to the rest of the UK or the Germanics?

Do English people think that they have more in common with their Germanic brethren like the Dutch, Norwegians, Danes, Germans etc than the Celtic Scots, Welsh and Irish?

No

Richardoo · 10/11/2025 01:25

Strange question. I have no connection whatsoever to the Germanics, not sure why I would have. I'm English living in a Celtic country.

I think we do, yes.

The Celtic countries have never really existed as autonomous countries responsible for their own decision making, finances, global reputation etc - I feel when you do, it forces you to make unpopular decisions, not just popular socialist ones that look great as a sound bite but in real life would be massively problematic if widely implemented.

It’s easy for the Celtic countries to be pro Palestine, pro socialism, pro generous welfare as essentially they don’t really have to do anything to make them happen - they look to England to bail them out financially (hello SNP!), they know England will ultimately be looked to to make big decisions regarding defence or military interventions on the global stage.

In that way I feel the Celtic nations never really grew into ‘adults’ and such matters are easier and more practical to discuss with other countries in similar positions.

Good Lord. 😮

Well, I dunno. I'm English and can speak Welsh and German. Also some Dutch, which is quite easy with English and German. Haven't done any Scandinavian languages though.

Got Welsh family and Irish ancestry on one side. Had a German boyfriend for a few years. Did my dissertation on Welsh history. Also did quite a bit of German history.

There are quite a lot of English people i don't really want to be associated with, but we share the same nationality anyway.

Weird question.

@Ticklyoctopus Scotland indeed had "developed the same sort of history" and had the national power to face off both the Vikings (under Macbeth) & eventually the English (under Bruce). They even pled their case for Independence to the Pope.

The original Parliament of Scotland (or "Estates of Scotland") was the national legislature of the independent Kingdom of Scotland. It is generally considered to have existed from around 1235. Whereas the Parliament of England (predecessor to Westminster) evolved from the magnum concilium (great council) of the monarch with Simon de Montfort's Parliament in 1265 establishing the English parliamentary model for the future.

The Scottish parliament was untouched by invasion whereas the English parliament was Norman, not Anglo-Saxon.

celticnations · 12/11/2025 19:01

@Ticklyoctopus And of course the Irish forcibly took their Independence from Britain - quite the victory for such a small nation.

Ddakji · 12/11/2025 19:11

Of course not. Why would I? Like many English people (and vice versa, of course) I have Scottish heritage (mum) and if you go back far enough Irish as well.

I can’t stand these transparent attempts by bad faith people trying to separate out the English from the rest of the UK.

Why do you want to be so divisive?

RaininSummer · 12/11/2025 19:12

Not at all OP.

lostintranslation148 · 12/11/2025 19:19

Definitely not. I find Dutch, Norwegians, Danes and Germans very different from the British.

VimtoRules · 12/11/2025 19:53

Definitely not! What a strange notion.
The 4 nations of the UK are not foreign to each other!

agree, dumb and small minded!

MaggieBsBoat · 12/11/2025 20:08

I’m a Briton in Germany married to a German and this is ridiculous. Our language connections date back thousands of years. We have more in common culturally with the French than the Germans or Dutch.

Absurd.

OSTMusTisNT · 12/11/2025 20:11

Celtic countries include parts of Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, France and Spain 😉

pancakestastelikecrepe · 12/11/2025 20:41

I feel an affinity to the Danes, but then I'm from a part of the UK which has strong ancestry links to Denmark. My Dane friends also say they feel they are closest in sensibility to the English

celticnations · 13/11/2025 15:40

I asked my English partner & they feel closer to rUK.

Some caveats - they don't like me not wearing a poppy (I'm Northern Irish/Irish) & though I'll stand I'll not sing the National Anthem due to the line about "rebellious Scots to crush". Neither will I enter Westminster - be too tempted to deface that a'hole Longshank's tomb!

Has the existence of the Republic of Ireland completely passed you by?

Winteriscoming80 · 13/11/2025 15:46
