We're planning on going to France - somewhere within an hour of the coast My dad lives there, we love it, it's a vast country so lots of areas to choose from. DH has got a German passport so we could go with no restrictions and actually be able to buy our own home for an affordable price. The alternative: stay in our really crappy rented house in the rainy south west until we die - no thanks! As soon as DD15 has made some sort of headway I to the world we'll be off!

I lived in HK for almost 2 decades- both DC were born there. If you ignore the politics it’s a great place to live. Also lived in UAE for a while before that which i didn’t like as much as HK but was fine on a day to day basis. I’m back in Uk now though and happy to be back- again I just try to ignore the politics!

Meadowfinch · 17/10/2025 22:37

I like Canada except their winters can be brutal. The same for Czech Republic, and Croatia.

I like Greece too but it can be spectacularly hot in the summer.

The UK was ‘abroad’ for me. I’ve also lived in the US, France, Ireland, and the ME. I will almost certainly move internationally at least once or twice more. I love a new culture, climate, landscape, language etc.

Have also lived in these two places. HK as a born and bred child pre 1997, and UAE as an adult. Kids were born there too.
Have been back in the UK now for 6 years, probably wouldn’t live in either again for various reasons, but would happily move abroad again.

What nationality are your children then? What passports do they have?

I'm just not feeling anchored to here anymore, I can't really describe it

Left 20 years ago and never regretted it. Live in France.

DeadsoulsAngel · 18/10/2025 13:44

Southwest Canada, I have friends there. I’ve previously lived in the USA (Miami) and would not return. I’ve also lived in Germany (near Bremen) and would happily return. Canada is a very real likelihood for us in the next five years.

mamagogo1 · 18/10/2025 13:50

We’ve been goggling Portugal, visas are relatively simple in our circumstances and we both have additional links to the country in the “other information” box. We don’t need to work so we have a lot more options that working aged people (though we could work or start a business on the visas, I was considering niche b&b

They are both British by decent and hold British passports. My husband is British and I was born in Hong Kong when it was still under British rule. I think they might need to have their children in the UK though.
I do get what to mean though about not feeling anchored. I would move abroad again, but it would have to be the right country for the right reasons. We had an opportunity to move to Vietnam, but looking into it, it wasn’t the right move for us.

MothershipG · 18/10/2025 14:31

I saw a tiktok about Thailand, you can retire there if you are 50+ & have a certain amount of savings or income, apparently the cost of living is very reasonable.

So I have told my grown up kids that they can stay in the house, pay me rent and their father and I are moving to Thailand with the dog. I have told DH that learning to speak Thai will help keep our brains young.

Back in real life...I've never been to Thailand & would hate to be that far away from my kids so it probably won't happen 😂

Hoppinggreen · 18/10/2025 14:40

We are moving abroad in about 5 years, probably Spain as we both speak Spanish. DH has an EU passport so we can
I have been looking at an inland property outside tourist areas and we can pick something nice up for under £50k

Similarly, my DC (HK born) are British my descent plus they have permanent residence rights in HK (as do DH and I). You can only get HK citizenship if you have 25%+ Chinese ethnicity and even then it's quite a process.

@Notjustabrunette yeah- it's basically for our DC to pass on their British citizenship automatically, their children need to be born in the UK. If their DC are born overseas and the other parent also wasn't born in the UK, then they would need to apply for citizenship for your GC. If both parents are British by descent then it's normally given, especially if the alternative is them being stateless (i.e. the baby is born in a country with no route to citizenship like China). More complicated if they could get another passport via the other parent.

It's becoming an increasing trend for people from wealthy/ more expensive Asian countries to retire to sheltered housing/ care homes in Thailand as so much cheaper/ no care worker shortages. It's a growth industry.

ginasevern · 18/10/2025 16:15

Southern Italy for me. Lived there before for many years and somehow ended up back in the UK for more years than I intended. I do love the UK and I particularly like the sense of humour. A good English summer's day is also hard to beat, but there just aren't enough of them! I lived near Naples (which was wonderful) but in my dotage would aim for the beautiful and more tranquil Cilento region.

I live in the US right now (not by choice, I’m married to a US serviceman), and I would never choose to live here.
I’ve lived in Germany for a short time, and I’d happily go back there.
We are heading back to the U.K. for the next posting cycle, and after that we have options of either back to the US, Italy, Japan, Guam or Germany for base postings. Or if an embassy job becomes available, it could be literally anywhere in the world - both of us are hoping that an embassy job in one of the Nordic countries becomes available 😍 I’ve never been to any of them, but DH spent a lot of time in Finland and fell in love with it.

A friend of mine who is also married to a US serviceman was posted to Japan and loved it.

Off to S of France when circumstances allow. Fortunate enough to have a family home (3rd gen) and EU citizenship. It is still 24° there at the mo, though temps are due to drop next week. Even when it rains, it doesn't last long and blue skies and sunshine are plentiful enough in the winter. The 'cadre de vie' is just better.

Japan isn’t one I’m particularly excited about the prospect of tbh.
I’ve also heard plenty of good things from friends who’ve lived there, it just doesn’t really appeal to me as much as the other options.
In all likelihood, just because the universe seems to like to hand us challenges lately, we’ll end up back in the US 😕 But if we do, we are going to push for the east coast as much as we possibly can - there’s bases in New York State, Massachusetts and Virginia which would be preferable to coming back to the West Coast.

AgnesMcDoo · 18/10/2025 16:53

I’d love to move to Australia but I’m too old (51) to emigrate. They wouldn’t have me.

when plan to buy a place in lanzarote in the next 10 years and to live there part of the year.

Natsku · 18/10/2025 17:01

I moved to Finland 18 years ago.

I did not move for the weather Grin
