Ingredient which has made your culinary life easier (lighthearted)

I have just discovered frozen mash from Iceland. Five minutes in microwave! I have arthritic fingers which makes it hard to peel vegetables.

We've got a "World Foods" supermarket near us that sells peeled cloves of garlic frozen in huge bags for a couple of quid. You just keep them in the freezer then take out as many cloves as you need and use accordingly.

The same shop also sells frozen ginger, peeled and grated then frozen into blocks the size of an ice cube. A kilo costs about £2. Absolutely brilliant.

I learned about Idahoan mashed potato on MN several years ago. Complete game changer.

I’m in the US for work this week and found these in the supermarket. Wondering if I should buy more than just one pack in anticipation of them being great.

Can't believe I'm typing this (my dear Mum would be horrified if she was still alive!) BUT M&S frozen baked potatoes are a massive time saver - ooh the shame!😆

😂 I feel like that when I use frozen onion.

@Shantayyoustaysashayaway our local Morrisons is very good for this type of ingredient, usually in the world food section of the freezers.

@HomeStress
This sounds like something I need to try!

Sorry for potentially stupid question, but do you do anything with the crème fraiche first? (Whip, add ingredients etc etc)

Not stupid at all but no personally I don’t add anything to the crème fraiche as there’s plenty of flavour and herbs and seasoning in the bolognese sauce that I make for the lasagne and then I’m adding cheese on the layers too so I find it fine without. And the crème fraiche has a nice tang of its own but of course you can season it if you wish.

I have rheumatoid arthritis & fibromyalgia so my fingers, hands & wrists are very weak. I buy frozen sliced mushrooms, frozen sliced red onion (if dh shops he gets white onion) & frozen crushed garlic (would love to know where to get frozen garlic cubes from as we love garlic) If I'm making a cottage pie I buy a fresh tub of mashed potato & a tub of carrot & swede mix & mix them both together with pepper & put on top of the mince mix.

I get my frozen garlic cubes from Morrisons, either online or in store. This one:

Presumably this brand is available in other supermarkets/shops too though.

Achewyhamster · 21/10/2025 11:33

Spice Taylor curry kits-these are the tit's,I can knock up a curry in less than 10/15 minutes

Frozen onions-massive game changer

Frozen pastry sheets (I make bacon and cheese slices -you can buy the fresh ones but frozen are cheaper)

I bought some of these but scared to use them 🤣🤣

NotMeNoNo · 21/10/2025 21:22

Creme fraiche here too. Just as a quick carbonara -type pasta sauce. DH is intolerant to tomato so we use it a lot.

I do a cheat's chicken strog using full-fat creme fraiche. Add it at the end, give it a good stir and then season as needed - I find if the rest is well seasoned it might only need a squeeze of tom puree and a dash of something mildly hot.

It's easy. The packet says how many cloves each cube equates to, although you work out your own taste quickly enough.

landlordhell · 23/10/2025 18:04

Mac n cheese in the overnight right now. Mixed together. tub of ricotta with grated cheddar, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Stir through cooked macaroni and fresh spinach and spring onion. Chopped up some mozzarella and crispy bacon and combined. No bechamel/ cheese sauce action.

Two cloves of garlic per cube. I don’t use the ginger.
Where would I find the crispy onions, please?

@Karmakamelion
Picking up on the latest posts about Taj frozen crushed garlic, and rereading the back of the packet, I realise my mistake. 1 cube is equivalent to 4 cloves of garlic. Sorry.
We love garlic in our house, the more the merrier, so we wouldn’t notice eating twice the quantity!

Yeah but they might have meant small puny cubes. Best to double it just to make sure 😁

Ohtodostarjumps · 23/10/2025 20:49

@Talipesmum 😂

landlordhell · 25/10/2025 08:37

Thanks to his thread I bought the Taj garlic cubes and the ginger cubes yesterday in Morrisons-£1 each bag! Bargain. Used them both in a curry last night. Wasn’t overly strong with one cube of each.

Lifestooshort71 · 25/10/2025 17:36

I've been looking for the white Bisto with no luck (do I need Waitrose?). I fancied adding mustard to it or grated cheese. I've also bought the garlic from Morrisons - they had cubes and a much smaller bag with cloves in it so bought both to be safe. Have put in freezer in a zip lock bag 😆 just need the crispy onions....

GinkoRebelFoxes · 25/10/2025 21:52

I buy jars of a sort of confit garlic that are amazing. I also use dried garlic flakes. (I can't be arsed to peel garlic.)
Sriracha and peri peri spice/salt
Mushroom ketchup, though our Sainsbury's seem top have stopped selling it.
Balsamic and Lea and Perrins in anything with beef or gravy
Tracklements honey mustard in sauces
Cumin in a chilli

SpiceGhoul · 25/10/2025 22:04

@Lifestooshort71 I get it on Amazon with free delivery if you have prime? They do a cheese one too but I haven't tried it. I do occasionally use their pepper sauce granules for a quick sauce if I'm feeling lazy. My cheats are McDougal's thickening granules or Chinese curry powder/ paste, I like Yeungs best or Goldfish. I also sometimes buy the ready chopped up soup mixes when I'm short of time and want to make a big batch of soup for lunches.

Very Lazy Chillies. Which is ridiculous because I have a greenhouse full of chilli pepper plants!

Same 😂

Gothamcity · 26/10/2025 10:07

Aromat seasoning. When I can't be bothered, or don't really know what I'm actually cooking, I just chuck a load of aromat on, and it always turns out nice. Potatoes... Aromat, casserole... Aromat... Spagbol... Aromat, Roast dinner, cover the while fucking thing in aromat, done. (disclaimer: not suitable for cakes, and desserts)

Ah yes Goldfish curry paste is good.
