If you ran out of cash or there was no food in shops

How many days of meals could you last with just food currently your house? I'm thinking reasonably decent nutritious meals- not just carbs- and no one goes hungry.

I reckon about a fortnight as we have loads of tins of beans for protein and spices and stuff but we might struggle with running out of fruit and veg.

Been ill so got through a week's worth of food already. Got a teenage boy so not long.

DD and I could last a couple of months. Ds a couple of days.

Yeah, I feel that the answers will be skewed by the presence of teenage boys. I have two so probably about 4 days.

Me & DH - could probably eke out 2-3 weeks.

GreenGodiva · 16/10/2025 18:47

I could easily do 6+ weeks as I have loads of dried stuff.

yellow split peas, red lentils, green lentils, green marrow fat peas, chick peas, kidney beans, butter beans.

rice, rolled oats, quinoa, dried noodles. Loads of dried and tinned fruit too.

tomato paste in mini tins, maybe 60 various stock cubes, loads of dried herbs and spices.

I’ve also got a well stocked herb garden and an allotment. And that’s before you even start on the freezer. The tin Cupboard is full of corned beef, tinned veg, dried pasta etc. The chest freezer is rammed with frozen food as I’ve got an auto immune disease and never know when I’m going to be sick so I like to know I’ve got decent food available 24/7.

About 10 days from the cupboards/freezer.

I make all our bread and have enough flour to last about 4 months, and living rurally, if there was a genuine shortage of food, we can always resort to wild pigeon and rabbit so we'd survive.

HarryVanderspeigle · 16/10/2025 19:29

We could do a week on normal food. Not sure how long we could go after that on increasingly odd concoctions. No milk for tea would make me very sad.

Also the move to convenience food would mean less in the stores, as things like microwave rice pouches and chopped onion take up more space.

WonderingWanda · 16/10/2025 19:39

Maybe 4 - 5 days. There's a lasagne and a zip lock of chilli on the freezer. Also fish and chips. Some frozen fish and prawns for a risotto. Cereal in the cupboard and a couple of longlife oatmilks. Veg to make soup with. Cheese and crackers. Some yogurts and fruit and a bit of salad. For lunches.

Then it would get a bit scrappy but I reckon we could survive calorie wise for another week. There's enough ingredients to make a few trays of flapjacks. Ice cream. Loads of quinoa but nothing much to go with it. Random half used bags of seeds nuts and dried fruit. Some eggs, could probably rustle up some cake. Loads of bread flour but I think we've run out of yeast. Also two massive fruit trees in the garden I could raid. I wonder how long you could survive on apples?

WhywasIborntoolate · 16/10/2025 19:41

two weeks at a stretch tbh but that is because I have just had a shop in.
most of the space in the kitchen is taken by equipment, like pans, measuring jug, mixing bowl, other baking stuff, slow cooker I don’t use, a number of other bits, or the dog food. But I am not that organised! I need a skip I think.
I don’t have a massive kitchen, just a normal one. Why do you ask

Such an interesting thread thanks for responses! It was sparked by the fact I didn't get round to shopping so was rustling through the cupboards to find components of a meal.

I wasn't thinking of an apocalypse situation more like the early days of covid (it's interesting we've kind of forgotten) where you might have to be creative for a few weeks. But interesting to hear people's take on surviving past a few months!

Hmm. We have a very well stocked pantry and chest freezer but I think decent nutritious meals would be around 2 weeks. After that would start getting fairly random combinations but we'd probably last a couple more weeks. Milk would be a problem , we get through gallons of the stuff.

Flat breads?

@Allswellthatendswelll flat breads is a good shout. I have oil. Also a bucket (almosy) of peanut butter too.

Off to put yeast in my tescobonline shopping basket now!

Strawberryorangejuice · 16/10/2025 19:48

A week of decent food with adequate protein. Another week or so of boring carbs and some veg/spices.

Adooree · 16/10/2025 19:49

We could live for months as have full kitchen cupboards , 2 freezer fulls and a utility room that has 2 floor to ceiling cupboards full . Although don't keep longlife milk , have 2 dozen eggs , and obviously bread would not keep ( have some in the freezer )
Could make bread as have dried yeast & extra strong flour but only 1 pack .

Catarinabella · 16/10/2025 19:50

Im not a prepper by any means, but born late 50’s so probably described as a “ boomer” Could probably survive for quite a few months in store cupboard/ freezer. Hope I don’t have to. PS donate to food banks weekly

TangyJellyTot · 16/10/2025 19:51

DS works for a supermarket and is paid every 4 weeks. We’ve got a staff discount card and the discount goes up to 15% over payday weekend

that means I buy 4 week’s worth of cheese, butter, bacon, chicken, mince etc as well as tinned stuff to last the 4 weeks or more.

It is fresh we would struggle with as he picks things up for us most shifts.

I definitely contribute to our milk usage, I drink a LOT of tea. If it was just me in the house I'd happily live on cheese biscuits and toast 😆.

strawgoh · 16/10/2025 20:06

We live in the countryside so if all else failed, I guess I'd have to resport to what's growing in the farmers' fields and hope I don't get caught.

A diet of onions and potatoes isn't all that enticing but the sprouts will be ready soon. 😂

FurForksSake · 16/10/2025 20:10

@strawgoh by that reasoning I’ll be fine, there’s a field of sheep and cows within a one minute walk and I’ve got an allotment!

DeathMetalMum · 16/10/2025 20:11

I've just done the weekly shop today so could easily manage two weeks with normal meals, that we would usually eat. Though I didn't buy a loaf of bread. After that we could probably manage another two weeks of fairly decent meals, some things we usually eat and then also someone having some leftover curry while others have chilli. We do have a number of meals from the freezer on this week's menu.

I have tins of baked beans, kidney beans, sweetcorn, a fair amount of tuna, and lots of pasta, some rice and lentils. I don't think we have any jars of pasta sauce though.

ApathyCentral · 16/10/2025 20:11

Between 2 and 4 months at present. Usually it’d be longer, but I need to buy another big bag of rice.

Hohofortherobbers · 16/10/2025 20:16

Balanced nutritional meals, about 4 days. I don't stock much. I'd probably survive a month though eating odd combos

familyissues12345 · 16/10/2025 20:21

Freezer is full, I reckon we could live for about 10 days on the food in there. Fridge isn’t too badly off, so combined with cooking sauces/tins and other items such as bread and eggs we’d probably be ok for about 3 weeks all up.

However, that’s a lot of baloney according to our teen son who claims THERES NEVER ANYTHING TO EAT!! HmmGrin

BettysRoasties · 16/10/2025 20:22

If you’re worried about yeast get started on a sourdough starter. Then as long as you feed it you’ll always be good to go.

Dishtrish · 16/10/2025 20:23

A long long time as long as the electric is on, we have 3 chest freezers and cupboards full after a Costco run.

RedRiverShore5 · 16/10/2025 20:24

Probably months, there are only two of us and we have 2 freezers and a pantry, all are full
