Hi, I’m starting a new job which is self employed, I have to invoice them each month for my hours, I’m only going to be working 10 hours a week until i get another qualification middle of next year to start working more.
I have never been self employed before, what do I need to do?
I’m autistic so want to know what I need to do! Thank you

Sounds like you are employed but being taken advantage of to me

Are you sure you’re self employed?

If you're working for the same person/company then you are not self employed.

This is a common ploy to avoid employers NI, pension contributions, annual leave and employment rights.

I'd really look into this before you make the jump.

You have to tell HMRC that you are self employed and fill in a tax return (and save enough money to pay the tax at the end of the financial year).
But you can't be self employed if you are only working for one employer, so don't go ahead if this is the case. Either the company should put you on their payroll or you need to find other paid work. You and the company will both get into trouble if you break this rule.

From what I can tell I have the option of working for other people outside of the hours I will do, but the contact says I must tell them first because of the nature of the business

You are sort of right but its not as simple as that.
I think OP is probably in hidden employment though which deprives her of her rights

Do you choose your hours (within reason)
Do you use your own equipment?
Can you send a substitute to do your job?
Do you attend team meetings?

I fully understand that.... it was more of a simplistic overview, to get the op thinking. As a small business with employees, I really hate the way employers try to do this.

Put your details in here and it will tell you what your status is and whether you should be doing a tax return.

Employed people have that option too.

As PP says, are these hours of your choosing or are they what the company dictate? Whose equipment do you use and what happens if you’re off sick or on holiday?

Most Employees have that option as well
