Am I ridiculous for wanting a 5m vacuum hose...

I'd have put this in aibu but it's really not that big a deal.

Prefacing this by saying I have a bad back and fell down the stairs 2 years ago which left me needing surgery and pins/plates. This has left me a bit anxious on my steap Victorian terraced stairs.

I've just discovered that I could buy a very long vacuum cleaner hose to fit my Henry. Heck. They do so many different lengths one is spoiled for choice. They're about £35. Which isn't an issue in the grand scheme of things. But it would mean I don't have to carry the hoover up and down stairs. I could leave the shark downstairs, Henry upstairs and use the long hose to do the actual stairs. Leaving a hand free to hold on for dear life instead of clutching the heavy Henry or the lift away that won't stand of its own volition.

I just feel like I'm being silly and needy to get over myself but then gain, is it really so wrong to circumnavigate my anxiety when the attachment is right there to buy on the internet?

Now I'm not sure if I am more pathetic for my stairs fears or for feeling the need to ask Mumsnet about it. Fml.

Buy it!! No need to think about it, go now. Shhoo. Click, buy, well done.
(Yes, why wouldn't you. It would help, it's not too expensive and, well, and nothing)

Makes sense. However, instead of holding on by one hand, you might feel more secure to sit on the stairs and do the couple of steps just above you before moving down another 2 each time?

TaraRhu · 14/10/2025 22:35

By all means get it but it sounds like a massive trip hazard to me..

We used to live in a (rented) house with an inbuilt hoover! It had one port per floor and then a super long hose and you just attached it to the hoover ports.

Good things - did help with e.g. hoovering the stairs. Bad news - I was surprised how unwieldy the hoover hose was so it was a pain to keep looped up tidily etc. Worth a try for sure but don't expect it to be miraculously easy to use.

My parents have one hoover for downstairs and one for upstairs to save lugging it about. They now have a Dyson type hoover which they prefer for stairs to any previous incarnation.

Buy it op,it sounds great!

Having a hand free on steep stairs is very sensible. Get the hose, it’s definitely worth seeing if it helps you at that price.

I'm buying the hose, bonus being I found it for £15. More than worth the experiment. Thanks for not laughing at me lovelies. X

I'm too late as you've just ordered it but wanted to ask if you'd be okay with the weight of the long hose @Mmmcheese89 ? I bought an extension to my vacuum nozzle and struggle with its weight and my crappy back.

Mmmcheese89 · 15/10/2025 12:00

@NebulousSadTimes I think so. It's only 1.5m longer than my current one. And even if it's weighty, it still won't be as heavy as the actual Henry... Hugs to my fellow spinally challenged though. X

I think sounds unwieldy and dangerous too.

Do you live with anyone else? Delegate stairs to them.
Or get a cheap, lightweight cordless hoover. So much easier for stairs.
