My DC have never asked for a lift to the Airport..

We live within 1.5 hours of several major airports. When I go, I either drive (and pay extortionate parking charges) or go by public transport, which is also pretty straightforward, and cheaper if I'm travelling alone.

Most of my friends seem to be regularly doing airport runs for their adult children, often in the early hours.

I'm not saying I wouldn't do it, if I was asked, or it was necessary, but it's occurred to me mine have never asked.

Hopefully that's because they prefer to be independent, rather than they don't feel they could...?

You know how they operate in every single town and village up and down the UK do you?

You don't have to use a local taxi you can call a taxi from where your going to

Dsd has dropped us a few times, payment for not paying rent Grin

I would never have dreamed of asking me parents for a lift to the airport! How entitled. If you can’t afford to get a taxi to airport then you can’t afford to go on holiday.

I should think a lot of parents are offering. I’m 40 and my dad still insists on doing stuff like airport lifts. We are just that kind of family.

At 84? And because you can’t drive. Wow I’d feel so bad..

I wouldn’t dream of asking elderly parents to drive me to the airport for one of my many holidays. I pay for a taxi. For those that live in areas that don’t have taxis - you have to factor that in. You go the day before and stay in a hotel by the airport for example. You don’t expect elderly parents to be running around after you, facilitating your holidays…

I live abroad. My mum picks me up up from her local airport when I visit the UK. Twice a year.

What's your postcode? I bet I can get a taxi to go to your house.

I’m sure you can, but that doesn’t mean it’s a practical or affordable option at 3am 🙄

Yes, so you keep saying. That still doesn’t mean it’s a practical or affordable option at 3am.

Comedycook · 14/10/2025 17:43

I don't think I've ever been picked up from an airport or driven to one by a friend or relative.... wouldn't even occur to me to ask. I just get a train...if too late/early, I'd get a cab.

I'm sure. But the poster didn't say they couldn't afford a taxi, they insisted they lived in a place where no taxis ever go. Clearly ridiculous.

birdling · 14/10/2025 20:38

I wouldn't think of you as being close to an airport. 1.5 hours is a long way.
It would never occur to me to ask someone that far away to take me anywhere. I would just get public transport.

Why would it not be practical how is stepping into a taxi any different then stepping into a relatives car. It has to be affordable as its part of your holiday costs thats like saying I didn't get travel insurance because I couldn't afford it or where just going to hitchhike the other end as can't afford the transfers.

They won’t come this far as it ends up as a five hour+ round trip, unless you’re happy to pay £500 or so, which I’m sure you’ll tell me is just part of the holiday.

Edited

You're conflating two different issues.

Of course they'll 'come this far' 🙄 A five hour round trip for an airport taxi driver is absolutely run of the mill. You can book a taxi from any UK airport to anywhere you want to go (assuming mainland UK of course). Airport runs are good money for drivers, you're never going to have a private hire firm turn down a request because a five hour job is too far!

You say 'unless you're willing to pay £500 or so'. Well yes, you'd be expected to pay...pre-booked private hire transport can be expensive. However, £500 for a five hour round trip seems unlikely. The going rate is closer to half of that for much of the UK, assuming you're not getting your quotes from executive travel companies. About £50 per driving hour is a closer estimate for the vast majority.

1.5 hrs isn’t living close to the airport

They do

No, they don’t.

No, they don’t.

Well come on then. Where in the UK would an airport transfer company refuse to take you from an airport? UK mainland obvs.

OP lives somewhere where there's reliable transport to an airport <shock>

Whatever next <misses point of thread>

Exactly what i was thinking. Where i live (only semi rural not super isolated), to get to the airport without the use of a car i would need to get a taxi to the station, a train to the tram stop then a tram to the airport, doable but adds a lot of time and expense to the flight. This would only work if your flight was during the day and not for early/late flights as there are no trains then.

fckedupsituation · 16/10/2025 12:26

This is strange and feels like a covert brag to be honest but hey ho we are all different. My darling boy drive me to the airport at 4 o’clock in the morning recently. Hour there and back, £8 just to drive in and out. I then collected him and his friend from the airport after their holiday late at night. It’s what we do for each other. Just pure love.

FettleOfKish · 16/10/2025 12:29

I’d drop / pick up anyone from the airport if it was convenient but we live a 10 minute drive away and can park right outside for free. It’s nice to have someone waiting when you get home.
