Help me remember the painter and title of this artwork

It's a pre-raphelite painting. Possibly Ford Maddox Brown, or maybe William Holman Hunt - closer to their style than Rosetti

It shows a country lane with a couple and a young child or baby. The man is standing and has a pack or some implements over his shoulder. The woman and baby/child are seated.

I thought that the MN hive mind might be able to put me out of my misery.

The Last of England?

tobee · 13/10/2025 16:15

No The Last of England is people in a boat, with a man and woman in the foreground on stormy sea.

SorrelForbes · 13/10/2025 16:15

I was going to say The Last of England as well by Ford Maddox Brown. It's my mum's favourite. It's in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

That's not set in a country lane, it's on a boat.

I asked Chat Gpt and it's given my some replies but I don't think any of them quite fit

The Vagrants by Frederick Walker?

tobee · 13/10/2025 16:25

Richard Redgrave, The Emigrant’s Last Sight of Home as mentioned by @Arlanymor is close as far as I can see although more people than op mentioned

Wainscot · 13/10/2025 16:28

Richard Redgrave, The Emigrant’s Last Sight of Home.

No, not that. Too many people.
This is just a man and woman (with child/baby)
I think they're all to the left of the picture and he may be wearing a green or brown coat.

That's got to be it!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/10/2025 16:39

I found it by asking google Ai search for a Victorian painting rather than pre Raphaelite. I don’t know technically if it counts as pre Raph or not but the AI seemed to have quite a narrow idea of what pre Raphaelite meant (just the few main figures) and I knew the painting existed because I had seen it myself.

BINGO!
Thankyou so much.

I was at an exhibition last week and one of the paintings there reminded me of this, but I couldn't recall any specifics.

Clearly, I have my artists all muddled.

And I can't count people!

That was so quick!

I'm both impressed with AI and slightly saddened that it's killed the 8000 post thread where people spend weeks trying to guess a film/painting/book from an OP's vague and often inaccurate information.

Exactly so.
It’s too easy, I like more of a treasure hunt, with clues and blind alleys.
