How to stop old tenants post coming to my address

We are the owners of a house than was tenanted until 2020 (we completed in December 2020 and moved in, they moved out in the October).
Since then, I've not only had post for them, I've had parking fines, debt collection letters for numerous bills, and just now, her bloody tax reminder for her car which is STILL obviously registered here after 5 years. I've even had a collection agent at the door for an unpaid parking fine which went to court. Obviously, I showed proof that we live here now and all was OK, but it's a massive pain in the arse and I never know who is going to turn up chasing her next. I've returned and returned letters as "not at this address", I've written to companies, I've had to provide my personal details to prove I'm not her. I'm absolutely sick of it. How on earth do I get rid of her crap?!

After 5 years, those still sending letters aren't going to stop with a "return to sender".

I started googling the return address - and then phoning the company it linked to. That has had some sucess. Cannot get sodding nationwide to stop - despite the fact i escalated it to a complaint, and got £50 compensation for their inability to stop posting stuff here.....

Do you really care if some credit card company don’t get paid though? That’s their problem, they’re in the business of lending people money, don’t feel sorry for them.

Who said I felt sorry for them? But I don’t think it’s good for people to think the U.K. is such a stupidly soft touch, they can take the piss by leaving loads of debt, and no action will ever be taken against them.

Are you not aware that a good percentage of unpaid utilities bills just push up prices for all of us?

I have known the same situation as in my pp twice! The two flats I’ve owned in London. If it’s happened to me twice, it must be pretty common.

Why would the uk be a soft touch? It’s no different to anywhere else. People in all counties can’t afford to pay bills 😂

“Are you not aware that a good percentage of unpaid utilities bills just push up prices for all of us?”

I don’t really understand what you mean. A good % of unpaid utilities bills just push up prices for all of us? Firstly what is a good % of unpaid bills in relation to and secondly if you’d ever been in a commodities pricing meeting you’d know people’s unpaid bills aren’t making a dent 😂

It’s a soft touch in that people from other countries can leave the U.K., owing £20k, and return in future with no consequences.

Bambamhoohoo · 13/10/2025 17:55

It’s not like you can’t do that in other countries. Getting any credit as a foreigner to the uk is really hard anyway. They probably worked here for 10 years or something.

MummaMummaMumma · 13/10/2025 18:07

I return them for many months, but they now go in the bin.

polkadothorse · 13/10/2025 18:27

I still get post for a previous occupant ( from DVLA only the other day), and I’ve lived in the house for over 26 years: and the person to whom letters are addressed isn’t even the one we bought the house from.

ethelredonagoodday · 13/10/2025 18:27

We had this OP including bailiffs or similar turning up at the door for unpaid driving/parking/congestion charge fines. The person doing it to us is the owner BEFORE the person we bought from and her son. In the end on the driving stuff I rang DVLA and explained the situation, and they emailed me a letter saying the car reg had been removed from our address on their system. We also get post for them from France (some sort of government body), related to unpaid fines etc there, which I duly return to sender. It’s annoying!

at the house before this, we got Christmas cards for years for a particular person. I opened one after several years of receiving for the same name I didn’t recognise, to see if there was a return address inside, and it was a Christmas card from mum and dad… 😵‍💫😬

SwanRonsen · 13/10/2025 18:39

If you ever catch your postie you can ask them to only deliver mail to your names. They will return the rest for you. Or leave a note on your door saying only deliver for Smith and Jones please.

Annoyednewowner · 13/10/2025 18:41

Writing deceased on the front and returning to sender tends to work

Theunamedcat · 13/10/2025 18:51

Over ten years after she left an unpaid water bill has shown up for the previous tenant I rang the thrust of my argument was excuse YOU I pay my (bloody expensive) water bill you know I live here and she doesn't dont send it here again following week another this time a letter before action ive got it in writing this time that they know she doesn't live here and they won't send anymore we shall see what happens next ridiculous thing is the bill isn't even for my address its for her new one thirty miles away
