How will history remember Trump?

There's not a lot to like (IMO) and much of the time he sounds downright unhinged, but bloody hell, if he's pulled this off the way it seems, and especially if the peace holds....

He hasn't pulled anything off. Netanyahu isn't the sort of man to be persuaded to do anything he hasn't already carefully thought out already. It's just theatre. Trump is an utter fool.

You think? I'd be amazed if Netanyahu lasts long in post after this.

If he doesn't, it's because of pressure from his cabinet (or whatever it's called there). Trump has no influence with anyone. Look at how putin plays him.

I'd like to think you're right, but Israelis are changing his name and he's manged to get the agreement over the line, which no one else has.

What's changed that makes the deal acceptable to Israel now when it wasn't before?

Who knows? Things going on in the background no doubt. The israelis call the shots though and don't do anything they don't want to do. This is being presented as down to trump, but he's a failed businessman not even a politician. The man's a joke.

There is still a massive gulf between the two sides. A ceasefire and the return of the hostages is the easy bit. What happens next is going to be immensely challenging. And I don't think that Trump has any solutions to offer.

HeddaGarbled · 13/10/2025 15:29

Too soon to know.

tobee · 13/10/2025 15:46

Trump just wants the immediate adulation and hasn't got the personality/attention span to be interested in whether it's going to be lasting peace or not.

Israel was never the blocker: Hamas were.

Trump got the other Arab leaders on side, and the loss of their support is what made Hamas finally agree.

CalmShaker · 13/10/2025 20:23

It's incredible how so many have run Trump to the ground for the last ten years and are quiet with this. Even now I think they would rather see the war continue then admit he succeeded where others failed.

If the climate change and environmental predictions are correct history won't remember him for all that long because civilization will collapse.

I don’t know why everyone is so excited about this. I just see it as the end of this particular two year period of intense fighting. But none of the underlying problems are solved and they’ll be at it again before long.

I imagine the people living in a war zone - and the hostages and their families - are pretty glad and grateful that this particular ordeal is over.

I share your pessimism, since Hamas seem pretty clear that they won't disarm or give up power. I don't think they have it in them to put their people ahead of their own murderous desires, and make themselves irrelevant. But we'll see. If the Arab leaders hold firm - and can prevent Iran from continuing to arm Hamas - it's possible. Trump's negotiations with Iran might help with that too.

I’m quite happy for him to be remembered for bringing peace in the Middle East and potentially Europe should he pull anything off there. I hope he is not remembered for doing any lasting damage to anything tbh - anyone who thinks differently should give their heads a wobble. As for withdrawing international aid - surely well within their rights to do that if it’s what the electorate wants?
