I need a couple of spoonfuls of yogurt for my curry i’m making ahead of time, it’s smells fine and looks normal. I know yogurt you can generally go over the date, but I don’t know if this if pushing it ?!
it’s Greek yogurt if that’s relevant.

I just eat mozzarella with best before 30.09...
It's best before, not use by so I would.

Crunchymum · 12/10/2025 10:41

I wouldn't, it's not a few days It's almost 2 weeks out of date?

Especially if I was feeding it to other people.

givingmyopinion · 12/10/2025 10:42

No as it’s more than a few days past BB.

Taste a small amount - I bet it’s sour…

Yep, it’s fairly sour, not bad but not the same as it should be 😆 I’ll leave it then ! Was just trying to avoid having to cook it tonight. The chicken I’ve got goes out today, but I have no local shop or yogurt ! So looks like I’ll have to wait for dh to bring some home after work

Probably a wise idea!

BananaPie · 12/10/2025 11:09

I would eat it. Yoghurt is visibly mouldy when it’s off

inamo · 12/10/2025 11:10

I never look at the dates on yogurt. I've just had a look in the fridge now (for research purposes) and the plain Greek yogurt (the massive pot) was out of date on 2 October. I'm still having it every day and still here. The cultures in it can be used again and again to make more if you are that way inclined, so yogurt is probably the safest out of date thing you can eat - IMO.

Thelondonone · 12/10/2025 11:13

I’m eating yoghurt with an August use by-but it hasn’t been opened. Yoghurt is fine.

FinallyHere · 12/10/2025 11:14

If it looks and smells ok, then I’d taste and adjust for any extra sourness.

such a waste to ditch food without checking whether it really is perfectly ok to eat.

Shr3dding · 12/10/2025 11:15

It wouldnt occur to me not to, use your eyes and nose . Yogurt last for ages.

I have tasted it. It’s sour. It doesn’t taste “off” nor does it smell, but I also don’t want to have the shits lol

Would the sourness even be noticeable in a curry? I’d have thought all the spices would cover it

Yes this isn’t opened either

Just to note, it is not "out of date". It's just past best before.
Yogurts if stored properly can last 2 weeks past BB.
The extra sourness doesn't necessarily mean it's off. The bacteria continue to works so can change flavour.

Test it on yourself first with full spoonfuls😂 joking.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 12/10/2025 11:21

Yoghurt tastes fizzy when it goes off.
It lasts way beyond best before dates in my experience. I’d happily eat it

JustJani · 12/10/2025 11:21

It's like milk, the best before is meaningless really because it's so obvious when it's off, as it's inedible. If you can eat it, it's fine to eat!

Bjorkdidit · 12/10/2025 11:39

Yogurt always tastes sour and I don't think it will make you ill anyway. Its not even 2 weeks past the date so I'd expect it to be fine.

So much perfectly safe food is wasted because people are far too over cautious.

I think the manufacturers can be blamed here though, they’re the ones that put who put the dates on. I try and use common sense as much as possible

That's why they put "best before" though, not "use by".
They know how long it last at the best. Then the quality changes. Consistency, flavour etc.
"best before" is not an indicator of when it goes off or should not be consumed anymore.

Yeah I am aware the difference in use by and best before. But how am I to know the typical time a product can last after a best before ? Maybe they should state it on the products ?

SolidarityCone · 12/10/2025 12:15

It won’t give you the shits, it might have an altered taste on its own but yoghurt is fine almost indefinitely - the next stage is cheese! I’d definitely use in a curry

Bettyandthebunion · 12/10/2025 12:17

I take it all back - if you google it says that as long as it doesn’t have mould, or the texture has changed and if it tastes alright, it’s more than likely safe to eat. I had some opened yogurt in the fridge that on day 5 tasted very sour and a bit funky which I didn’t eat but as yours is unopened it’s probably as PP’s have said, fine.

APatternGrammar · 12/10/2025 12:18

I‘ve gone 3/4 months over with yogurt before; it’s very clear when it’s gone off.

That depends on your storage so stating that would be pointless.
Yogurt can last generally 2 weeks unopened. Bit less open. BUT that all depends on your fridge temp, whether you only use clean spoon when dipping it in or whether you get crosscontaminate in and so on.
