Why does Palestine bring out such strong feelings?

I really don’t want this to become about individuals’ feelings about the conflict. There are plenty of threads for that.

I am interested in why Palestine provokes such a strong feelings about civilian in Britain. We didn’t see weekly marches and such intense, passionate feelings regarding any other conflicts over in, say, the past ten years (Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, Sudan, Congo, Somalia, and, of course, Ukraine). These all involve thousands of civilian casualties caused by conflict.

What is it about Palestine in particular that causes British people to feel so passionately about it?

Someone said to me today that, for them, it was the most pressing political issue. They have never even mentioned any of the other conflicts above. It got me thinking about it. If you care greatly about what happens in Palestine, why Palestine and not the other conflicts?

Please don’t come on and say you care about them all. It might be true but there is no doubt that the reaction to what’s happening in Palestine in Britain is much greater than the rest, which barely cause a murmur.

Because we've watched babies, children, men and women murdered on a daily basis for the last two years on social media without a pause. I've seen children taking their last breaths, guts spilling out, brain matter etc.

I've never seen anything like it.

But as a previous poster had mentioned, it has been happening, on a much bigger scale, in other countries. Not hidden. But nowhere near as much passion.

Icreatedausernameyippee · 11/10/2025 18:45

The country cried out against Russia the same way and the government acted on it.
The government continued to arm Israel. It's the injustice of it all.

Because its the longest running apartheid thats still in existence today and being supported by the most apparently civilised governments like ours/America

Don’t make me laugh. 2.1 million arabs living in Israel with equal rights. Thats 21% of the population. Why spread misinformation?

LargeChestofDrawers · 11/10/2025 19:02

Imagine person A does something utterly horrible to person B's family and friends, knowing that person B is likely to respond with fury and hurt person A's friends and family in revenge. Person A then paints themself as the victim, when actually, they have set it all up, using their own friends and family as collateral damage.

I don't agree with 'an eye for an eye' retribution by the way, but I see what has happened. My dh who is very, very much on the side of the Palestinians, and has been throughout this conflict and way before, also says that Hamas knew what they were provoking when they did what they did on October 7th.

Icreatedausernameyippee · 11/10/2025 19:08

A lot of it has to do with failed Israeli propaganda.
Many of the people I have spoken to about Palestine in the past two years hadn't really had any idea about what was happening there prior to the latest outbreak of conflict.
Their understanding was that Israel was a place and Jews lived there and very little beyond that.
October 7th happened and pro Israel media and celebrities went into overdrive. People started paying attention. They were outraged! How dare these dirty sand gremlins attack the peaceful Jews! Haven't they been through enough?
And then they got vocal about it, backed by the constant flow of (wrong) information from Israel. They beheaded 40 babies?! - later (quietly) confirmed to be untrue. And then they engaged in debate with people who have been vocal about Palestine for a long time.
And when people debate, they look at the other side for once. And then they research. And they realise they've been really vocal for the wrong team. And they see how they got there and the injustice of it all. And then they get really vocal for Palestine.
They see what Israel present to Western media and then what they say to it's people. They see how journalists were forced out. They saw how them people of Palestine were told to shelter in places that were later bombed but then Israel said "hey, who else would give them warning?".
If Israel had quietly gone about it's attempt at genocide it probably wouldn't have gotten as much backlash.
The fact that they manipulated (or tried to) and gaslight the people watching is what backfired so massively for them.
What do the Brits like worse than a genocide? Being made to feel silly.
And of course with social media as easily accessible as it is now, the cause spread like wildfire and that is how it came to be a priority for so many people.

They use London to shout. However their issues have nothing to do with us , so their shouting equals lost cause. This in a nutshell

If you don't read the news, how would I help .

Tesd the news and actually listen to political commentators from both sides and you'll have a more 3d picture

Worth studying the history of their region and what Europe went through with the ottoman and Arabic empires

I despair of people. The knowledge is out there instantly these days

Again, you aren’t actually explaining your points properly. I know lots about the history of the region and am very politically well-informed. You’re just not making any sense.

You started off by saying ‘it’s the Muslims, it’s not a British feeling’. There are nearly 4 million Muslims living in Britain- who are British. I was trying to extrapolate your point/meaning from that one sentence. Are you trying to say that it’s only Muslims who care about what’s happening in Gaza? That Muslims aren’t British?

I fear you're talking to someone inebriated.

@Icreatedausernameyippee it’s a shame other people don’t have that excuse!
