European Languages Day

Hi,

It’s European Languages Day at my sons school next week. Their year group country is France.

Was thinking a red or black beret hat, garlic necklace, striped top & maybe a fake moustache.

Any other ideas / suggestions?

Thanks!

Sounds fine. I wouldn't worry about the garlic necklace though!

I used to really enjoy the day at DD's primary. The PTA did a french breakfast for everyone, it was fun.

Sounds very tasteful although since we voted for Brexit why is the school doing this? Were you consulted? Is there a dress up as the union jack day too?

Could he perhaps go as a famous Frenchman? If he wears a suit and walks around all day holding his teacher's hand , he could say he's Emmanuel Macron.

Swap garlic for onions, he can be an onion johnny. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onion_Johnny

Or he can go as a vineyard owner and take the teacher a bottle of wine.

Because voting for brexit doesn’t mean that schools must pretend that Europe doesn’t exist?

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 10/10/2025 12:37

Anything that encourages children to look beyond their tiny world is good, nothing to do with Brexit surely?

OhDear111 · 10/10/2025 12:39

@didntlikeanyofthesuggestions These dc didn’t vote for anything and it’s also about culture and languages. We haven’t stopped being geographically part of Europe, thank God. I’m so glad schools are not run by people with your narrow views on the world outside the UK. All learning is valuable and it’s not dictated by a stupid ill informed vote.

Fushia123 · 10/10/2025 12:42

Maybe dress as a French artist? Do a little bit of research - Monet etc.
wear a large shirt on back to front with paint marks on it, Carry a few paintbrushes……possibly the beret.

That's not far off sending him in a sombrero for a Mexican theme, which would be frowned on. It's a bit stereotypical and I don't think any Frenchman has been seen in such an outfit for about 100* years

*only a slight exaggeration

How about Asterix or Obelix?

It’s about languages, as the OP clearly states. I’m guessing 99.9% of the days are English language days.

2022, apparently. Although I can’t be certain they wore a beret.

OhDear111 · 10/10/2025 13:33

Wear an apron and take in a basket of baguettes.

Would it? Be frowned upon? I really doubt that, you know 🤔

Also wondering if didntlikeanyofthesuggestions' post is serious or tongue in cheek 🤔. But the thought of a school 'consulting' parents about Languages Day made me chuckle.

Not keen on the onion necklace look anyway. Obelix gets my vote!

LadyGreySpillsTheTea · 10/10/2025 13:46

Actually the most French way of reacting to this would be to dress him much more stylishly than usual, stick a Gauloise in the corner of his mouth in best Belmondo fashion (lit or unlit, up to you), and teach him the drop-dead Parisian waiter‘s stare and a disdainful ‘Bof, ah weel nat subscrabe tu zeez eemature cleechaise. Ah weel dreenk mah black café in ze coin and zeenk about existenzialisme’. Mah nem ees Jean-Paul, you can col moi Sartre’. But the school may prefer the garlic necklace.
