Toddler warm PJs - wont go under duvet!

So this is my first first winter of a proper bed and no sleeping bag. She’s great but will not go under her duvet. Refuses. Obviously we will have heating on early hours but I’d like to find her some warm PJs / alternative that will keep up warm when sleeping without a duvet.

Any suggestions?! Happy to spend a bit if it’ll keep her warm and also means that I won’t need the heating on all night 😅

Don’t put the heating on all night! She’s less likely to go under the covers if she’s hot. I would put her in normal pyjamas, let her fall asleep uncovered then sneak in and pop the duvet over her once she’s asleep.

Toddlers always run hot. I would also put her in normal pyjamas or onesie and then put the duvet over her once she’s asleep. Most people sleep better in a cool room anyway.

Mine always slept outside the duvet at this age and still do now often as adults. I never did anything as I didn’t realise it was an issue!

We used sleeping bags with foot holes for this stage!

Yes this is what we do. We’ve got for a 1.5 tog so it’s warm, but still ok if she ever decides to actually use the duvet…

thisishowloween · 10/10/2025 10:29

She doesn’t need a duvet or for the heating to be on.

ShesTheAlbatross · 10/10/2025 10:30

I’d put the duvet over her once she was asleep. Mine would often kick it off, or end up sleeping on top of it.

I wouldn’t have the heating on overnight.

Devilsmommy · 10/10/2025 10:32

Mine would never go under the duvet and if you did the sneaky put it on when he was asleep as @Ozgirl76 says he'd have it kicked off in 2 minutes 😅 I used to put him to bed in joggers and a sweatshirt with short sleeve vest underneath and warm socks. And then the heating would go on in the night. He's 3 now and thankfully has a duvet over him but god that 18 months where he wouldn't felt like it was never going to end😂

We've just bought a couple of 2.5 tog footed sleep bags from next for our 2 year old for this exact reason. A bit pricey but worth it to avoid the extra night wakes!

Bunnycat101 · 10/10/2025 11:22

M&S normally do fleecy pyjamas which my girls have really liked. You could also try some slipper socks. I think it really depends on how cold your room gets. It’s still pretty warm at the moment so she might choose to go under once it cools down a bit. I’ve got one child that runs hot and one cold. I had to hide the fleecy pjs from the cold child during heat waves while the other one couldn’t bare to have any clothes or sheets on at night.

NerrSnerr · 10/10/2025 11:26

My youngest is 8 and has never kept pyjamas on, he sleeps in pants and has done since he was about 2 (a pull up then). If we put the duvet over him when asleep he’ll kick it off. When it’s properly freezing in January time he’ll occasionally wear pyjamas but this is very rare. He is 100% going to be one of those blokes who wears shorts all year round.

Howinthehelldidthishappen · 10/10/2025 11:58

My 17 year old hasn't used a duvet in I don't even know how long! There is a blanket on the bed for when needed. Hasn't ever actually used a pillow either 😂

Thanks everyone some helpful replies :)

Definitely don’t leave the heating on, why not just use an appropriate size sleeping bag? We used them til daughter was nearly 4.

Mushypeasandlemonjuice · 10/10/2025 16:55

i put an oversize jumper (thick, knitted) over the top of pjs.oversize like down to knees so that when he wriggles it doesn’t ride up much. The house gets cold in the night and no matter how many times i put the duvet back he’ll kick it off - his legs have to be free!

TheFairyCaravan · 10/10/2025 16:59

Don’t put the heating on. Primark are good for pyjamas. They do fleecy ones and thick, fluffy ones.

Bitzee · 10/10/2025 17:02

Toddlers run hot and are prone to overheating. It’s why they’re not ever supposed to have a duvet more than 4.5 tog even though that would usually be considered a summer duvet for an adult. I’d just get fleecy PJs, you can literally get them from anywhere (amazon, primark, supermarkets), put some socks on and leave her to it. Leave the duvet at the foot of her bed and you can always check on her as you go to bed and pop it over her if she feels cold. Unless she’s actually waking up cold and then refusing to go back to sleep, and if that’s the case I’d try the toddler sleeping bags, it isn’t really an issue.

Autumn1990 · 10/10/2025 17:09

A fleece onesie or I just put my 5 year old to bed in clean joggers and a sweatshirt with socks on. Don’t have to worry about the duvet then
