I was at a museum today and now I feel really old

Okay so I was killing time today as I was early for something and I decided to pop into the local museum/art gallery. Lots of interesting things.

However I just about choked when I got to the section that showed kitchens from various ages like the fifties etc. They had a bloody kitchen from the nineties - It looked just like the one I had in my first house (I'm in my fifties) and they had signs explaining all the new technology of the era. Bloody Nora, things from my era and in a museum!

Then they had another section with toys from yesteryear. There they had the fisher price garage my wee brother got when he was small. A rubix cube, a nokia mobile and other things that quite frankly I didn't consider really old enough to be in a museum.

It's hard to believe youngsters need this stuff in a museum because it now considered old/vintage/interesting enough.

I should have taken a photo of them both so you could have had a chuckle and I might go back and do that.

Anyone else in their fifties amused that we are now old enough to be featuring in museums.

I finally persuaded my mum to get a new landline phone when I sent her a photo of hers in a case at the Science Museum...

cobrakaieaglefang · 09/10/2025 20:23

Born in the middle 60s, my childhood and a good chunk of adulthood is now 'history' and museum objects. In my head its utterly ludicrous! Its only 20 years ago...oh wait..😆

Squirrelsnut · 09/10/2025 20:24

I had a Saturday job at Marks and Spencers in the 80s and I saw the uniform we wore in a museum recently.
Even worse is seeing fresh faced 'content creators' burbling on about great vintage 'pieces' they've found and I've got the same thing in my wardrobe..

Sez1990 · 09/10/2025 20:29

I’m in my thirties and it makes me feel old! But I suppose I thought wind up telephones and typewriters were vintage and interesting as a kid, even though they were still being used when I was born.
I suppose no one really thought to take a photo of a 3210 or kid’s toys at the time so they’re better preserved in that museum than in landfill. I think they should keep them in the archive room for another 10 years, though!

scissy · 09/10/2025 20:43

My history GCSE covered the fall of the Berlin Wall, half the class (including me) could just about remember it.
That was a weird sensation as a teen!

elQuintoConyo · 09/10/2025 20:43

I was in the V&A around 10 years ago and they had my childhood phone on display (a Deltaphone), along with my pink Tandy cassette player! I felt as old as the Mayflower!

I kind of miss the 'du duuurrrr, du duuuurrrrrr' noise of dialling the analogue dial.

narcASD · 09/10/2025 20:56

bloody hell I feel really old now too! I remember all of these things and I’m 48, I still don’t feel grown up though 🤣 I’d love to see what the 90’s kitchen looked like! What museum was it?

Achewyhamster · 09/10/2025 20:57

I remember standing in york castle museum with my father and kids (years ago)

We turned a corner and there was most of my childhood toys

The kids just looked at me like I was a dinosaur as I'm saying 'look dad!I had one of those!' and 'remember this?I got it for christmas!'

We turned a corner and found a load of victorian dresses

'Muuummm!did you wear those as a child?'

'No but you can tell your grandad to stop laughing, hes older than I am...'

Catarinabella · 09/10/2025 21:00

I feel your pain, my grandchildren thought my world was in black and white.

JaninaDuszejko · 09/10/2025 21:10

When went round York Castle Museum we were teasing my Mum about the 50s house, then we went round the corner and saw the 80s one, which was identical to the kitchen we had growing up. She just smirked and said 'now you know how I feel'.

@BlueEyedBogWitch did they give her a new hairdryer in exchange??

They did 🙂

I still eat Angel Delight - butterscotch - and it's my business and no one else's.

And Findus crispy pancakes...

I keep coming across your posts here and we must be about the same age! Ah memories… do they still make crispy pancakes?

I'm 46 and 3/4 in true Adrian Mole style!

They have them in Sainsburys, but my reliable sources tell me they are not the same radioactive orange colour anymore...

Arlanymor · 09/10/2025 20:13

Oh seriously, come over! Findus to start, then Vesta Chow Mein with the yellow crispy noodles that you have to deep fry and then the rest which is sachets boiled to various degrees.... then Angel Delight for me and Vienetta for everyone else. But the original - keep your mint to yourself!

Arctic roll anyone?!

Arlanymor · 09/10/2025 21:33

IHateEmptyPockets · 09/10/2025 21:32

Arctic roll anyone?!

Oh gosh YES! You'd get stuck in and then you'd have to chip away at the inside and your mum would say: "Don't play with your food!"

Well I have to, because the outside is defrosted but the inside is like yellow concrete!

Deadringer · 09/10/2025 21:34

I still have my 90s kitchen! 1996 to be precise.

WolfieMuma · 09/10/2025 21:36

BlueEyedBogWitch · 09/10/2025 19:29

My DH did an archaeology degree in his fifties. At one point they were behind the scenes at a museum, and had to put on special gloves to handle some old coins…some of which DH used to get in his pocket money 😂😂😂

That’s hilarious 😆

That’s the one! Grin I’m 53 and remember ‘How we used to live’ too - loved it.

Onelifeonly · 09/10/2025 21:38

When I was in my 40s some of the toys in the Bethnal Green toy museum were ones we had as children and appliances in the Science Museum ditto. At 50 something you're absolutely ancient!!!

MuseumAssistant · 09/10/2025 21:43

I work in a museum and it constantly makes me feel ancient!

We recently acquired a red telephone box and I'm constantly having to show children how to dial a number, because all they've ever known is pushing buttons or tapping screens! 😬

One asked me how it takes selfies!

SqueakyDinosaur · 09/10/2025 23:22

The mother of one of my oldest friends is Swiss and ferociously houseproud. When she got her kitchen redone, she picked all Neff appliances because that's what she'd had before. When they came to install her new cooker, they asked if they could have her 40 year old one for their museum, as it was in showroom condition, despite her having cooked in/on it at least once a day since it had been installed.

BestZebbie · 09/10/2025 23:26

It can be quite fun though - I went to the Museum of Computing History in Cambridge today and had a great time playing on their ZX Spectrum, BBC and Sega Mega Drive!
