Are you bothered if an OP doesn't come back?

I've realised I have a vague/subconscious limit of approx 4/5 pages of responses following an initial OP ...if an OP hasn't come back to respond by then, I guess I start to wonder whether I really want to get involved commenting. But I've seen so many threads recently with a single post from the OP and 15+ pages of responses (often on quite...contentious stuff), so maybe my approach isn't the norm? I guess it comes down to whether you're responding to connect with/advise the OP, or whether you look at it more as a precursor to a general discussion (and of course on how much you value OP updates, but for me that sort of depends on the topic).

Very dickish of me to start a thread about OPS disappearing and then bugger off (I was cooking tea, sorry!! 😂)

Thanks for all these responses, interesting to read takes on it. I feel like I'm at the more cynical end of it all tbh. It's a fair point though about some threads not needing responses so much - the ones where the OP is sort of a jumping off point. The ones that frustrate me are, as others have said, the more dramatic ones where people go to a lot of trouble to post sensible advice (and sometimes pour their hearts out) and then get into lengthy arguments with other posters over something which could be...and this is of course entirely rhetorical (my legal team advised on this wording)....made-up.
