Coverless duvet, should I get one?

Or more specifically will it fit in my washing machine?
I know nobody can give me an absolute answer for that but please humour me 🙂
So I don't know the drum capacity of my washing machine, it's an older model that was in the house when I moved in. The drum seems kind of average size? Not particularly small but not visibly oversized.
I want a double duvet but a thin on - 4.5 tog probably or maximum 7 tog.
Is it likely to fit in my machine?
Also how quickly do they take to dry if hung indoors after washing? I don't have a tumble dryer and living in Yorkshire the opportunities to hang it outside dry are limited 😄.
Thanks in advance for any relevant info.

Yes ! I have three and wouldn’t go back to conventional - mine fit in machine and even if squashed in come out clean and fresh , I just hang mine over the top bannister for a couple of hours and gather it on way to bed and it’s dry but our house is quite warm

Balloonhearts · 09/10/2025 17:31

No you do not. They take fucking years to fully dry. We're talking best part of a week if you can't put it out.

Linenpickle · 09/10/2025 17:31

Pain on the arse to wash so my vote is a no.

We have a single one for my son as for some reason he can keep duvet covers on duvets, God knows what he does in his sleep. It's actually quite good but I can't imagine anything bigger than a single would wash and dry properly on a normal machine.

WallaceinAnderland · 09/10/2025 17:32

Great if it fits in your machine. Mine dries really quickly. Wash, spin and back on the bed by evening.

Mulledjuice · 09/10/2025 17:34

I cannot understand the benefit of them. Nor do I understand how they are any better than using a normal duvet without its cover

SilverBlue56 · 09/10/2025 17:38

I have a double 4.5 tog and it fits in my machine easily
It takes a day or two to dry though, but it's cottony. I have an even thinner one that's more polyester and it's practically dry before it comes out of the wash.

For those saying what's the point - are you unable to imagine a situation where it's difficult to get a duvet cover on a duvet on your own? Lucky you if so. They are nicer than a 'naked' normal duvet because the outer fabric feels nicer.

Yes, they are soooo soft. Completely different feel to a naked duvet.

Ownedbykitties · 09/10/2025 18:06

Love love love coverless duvets. We have two large singles on a king size bed. I couldn't fit a king or a double in my standard size washing machine. They are a game changer. The whole bed is so fresh and clean. I wash them individually in a quick wash and they dry within a few house. Love them.

janehopper · 09/10/2025 18:10

Love mine, got them for the kids too. Really easy to wash and then tumble dry. Never have to put a duvet cover on again, which is a huge result!

janehopper · 09/10/2025 18:11

My double is a low tog, however I did have some issues with the thicker double in my old washing machine as sometimes it got too heavy to spin.

dontmalbeconme · 09/10/2025 18:15

Well, if washing is a problem, you could always reduce the frequency you need to wash it by sandwiching it between two flat sheets on the bed. Maybe you could even sew 2 sheets together into a kind of sleeve to make it easier. Then you'd only have to wash and dry the easy to wash and dry sleeve rather than the whole duvet! Perhaps you could even make more than one sleeve, so you could change them!

Suffice to say, I can't see the point in them. I'd rather we had buttons or ties on the corners of duvets and duvet covers to make changing them easier and to keep them securely in their covers.

Thank you for your views 😅, not exactly relevant to the thread but hey ho

Reason for wanting one is that I have sensory issues particularly with bedding, and I hate duvet covers ruckling up or getting annoying flappy bits.
Thanks everyone for the info, sounds like the jury is out of it will fit in my machine. It would be a thin one so hopefully it will be less bulky than a higher tog one. I plan to put a furry throw over the top.

I have an 11kg washing machine and my king size 10 or 12 tog washes in that, but it's a tight fit.
The lower tog ones fit easily.
They all dry quickly. No worries there.

I do love them and have a few. Bear in mind that the spares do take up a lot of storage space. I can never get them into a tight enough roll to stay in the cupboard.

I wouldn't go back to separate duvets now. I like that the whole thing is fresh and clean.

Got a lovely patterned one from Amazon as well, so worth a look on there.

No they don't. I've got a 10.5 tog double and it's dry within the day it's washed. And that's dried on an airer indoors, not outside. A 4.5 tog would dry in no time. OP mine just about fits in my 7kg machine so yours would probably be ok

CloverPyramid · 09/10/2025 21:23

We have a single one for our son’s bed and I like it much better than doing duvet covers. If I wash it first thing in the morning, it’s dry by bedtime even if I just hang it over the bannister.

We ordered a double one for our bed and it just doesn’t fit in the machine, even though we have an 12kg machine. I don’t know if other brands are less puffy but I can’t afford to risk it and find out.

Because the whole thing is clean and fresh each time the bedding is washed, it's all clean not just the top covering. This makes a huge difference for allergy suffers. Also, because it's so much easier than faffing around and fighting with duvet covers. Also because they always look neat on the bed as they do not wrinkle and ruck up.

obviously because they are coloured or patterned and look much nicer.

Easier to wash than duvet covers. How many times I've had to unknot duvet covers that have swallowed any other bedding and towels I've washed with them. Coverless duvets dries faster than duvet covers too. Dry within a few hours.

People always say this but mine literally dries hung over the bannister in a few hours, even when the heating isn’t on!

Cantsleepdontsleep · 09/10/2025 21:46

Seems there are variations in brands maybe. We have king size night owl ones which only just fit in the 10kg washer and dry very quickly! They say you can tumble dry them but that takes much longer and bleached the material unevenly. They sent me new ones so I now use the old ones inside a duvet cover as they are so much easier to wash than normal duvets (but probably only wash them twice a year or if needs must).

Dogaredabomb · 09/10/2025 21:51

I have a thin one that fits in easily and an enormous one that I have to take to the washer dryer at the petrol station. One of my sons, for some unknown reason, literally breaks duvet covers and often ends up inside them. This is the only solution with him 🤣

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 09/10/2025 21:56

Best thing ive ever bought! Mine doesn’t fine in my washing machine but i just take it to the launderette when i need to wash it. I either hang it on the line in summer or use the launderette dryer ( much bigger and hotter than a domestic one) in the winter.

This is exactly why i got one and my son who has ASD has one as well.
