How old is your phone?

WilliamBell · 08/10/2025 21:35

Mine is three years old (I always buy outright and then have a SIM only contact) and it's getting quite slow, but it's still functional, so it seems really wasteful to get another one.

Just curious as to how old everyone else's phones are and how often they replace them.

OP posts:
Bluevelvetsofa · 08/10/2025 21:36

Mine’s older than yours and I have no plans to replace it.

ForLoveNotMoney · 08/10/2025 21:37

Mine has just gone into its 5th year. It’s slow but t still works so will keep it until it dies or becomes unusable

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 08/10/2025 21:38

Mines at least 5 years old, was a new I phone when I got it though.

It’s still going okay.

Sarah2891 · 08/10/2025 21:41

A year and a half. I keep them until they are too slow to use.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/10/2025 21:41

I just upgraded last week. I’d switched to sim only rather than upgrade after my last contract, so my phone was four years old and the battery life was becoming really poor. I’m really pleased with what I now have, an iPhone 16.

everyoldsock · 08/10/2025 21:43

Four years (iPhone 12). It’s not as quick and responsive as it used to be so I’m getting an iPhone 17 next week to have a more enjoyable and efficient experience. I always average four years per phone.

SilkAndSparklesForParties · 08/10/2025 21:43

Two months. Replaced a four year old phone that had got slow and the battery was draining quickly. I don't go top of range and woukd have bought outright but over three years, I'd have saved £6.

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 08/10/2025 21:45

My phones just coming up to 3 years. It’s a 14 pro max. The battery is shot and it keeps doing odd things that suggest it’s on its way out. I’m not letting it win tho! I’ll replace the battery if I need to (well someone will) and I’ll put up with the quirks.

I think it heard me saying I was contemplating a new one…

TheDenimPoet · 08/10/2025 21:45

Mine's just over a year old, but I do keep phones until the bitter end. I keep them for years and years, until they either stop working or they can't run newer apps, but then I will buy the most up to date, best phone out there when I get a new one.

So every time I get a new phone, it feels like I've entered a new kind of space age dimension!

robinsnest1967 · 08/10/2025 21:47

6 years old! Definitely need to replace it as I have no storage left to take photos or download apps!

PickleSarnie · 08/10/2025 21:51

Mine is over 3 years. But i bought it on backmarket so assume it's probably more like 4 years old. It's an s21. Works fine.

There is literally nothing exciting in new phones - other than a camera with a few extra megapixels - that tempts me to get a new one before this one dies.

VikingLady · 08/10/2025 21:55

Only 2 1/2 years, but it’s an iPhone so planned obsolescence means it’s clearly on its way out. I’ll use this one until it actually dies though. The prices are astronomical now.

RoverReturn · 08/10/2025 21:56

7 yrs old. No plans to replace it. Still Works!

DuesToTheDirt · 08/10/2025 22:10

Nearly 8 years. The OS is unsupported now so some of my apps don't work and I can't get updates for them. Annoying. Airbnb is broken not only in the app, but in Safari - the interface doesn't work properly.

YorkieTheRabbit · 08/10/2025 22:17

I got mine in December, an iPhone 16 pro max, it replaced my old phone which was six years old.

Don’t you find that annoying? Worse is that your phone is vulnerable to hacking, cyberattacks and malware - that alone would make me get a newer phone!

Gingercar · 08/10/2025 22:22

Six years old. Doesn’t seem slow.

I have one that takes photos that move for a couple of seconds. Some of them are of my late father and are so precious. Does anyone know if I upgraded to a newer iPhone would the photos still move/talk?

Changeforachange · 08/10/2025 22:26

I bought this Poco X3 for about £150 three years ago and it's still going strong.

Sadly, it no longer gets updates so I will eventually have to change, but I recon the economy has made it a spectacular purchase.

Nothankyov · 08/10/2025 22:29

Well this post is the perfect place for my little rant. I had an iPhone 13 (I think) for years - also bought outright like you OP until last month were I was out and I dropped in the car park. I picked it up and the screen was very smashed I brought it home and had to put it in sandwich bag (as small pieces of glass kept coming off) so my DH could take it to the shop. He took a look at it and told me to get a new one and stop being so ridiculous. So now I have an iPhone 15 but under protest! 🤭

edited to say: obviously I only replace it when I really have to as I would rather spend my money somewhere else but then I’m never chasing new technology.

EerieDecorations · 08/10/2025 22:30

Iphone 14pro, will be 3 at Christmas. No slowing or loss of function yet but the battery drains a bit faster than it used to. I tend to get tempted by a better camera every 4 years or so.

menopausalfart · 08/10/2025 22:32

Same as yours. Sim only with Smarty.

AffIt · 08/10/2025 22:36

I bought a brand new top spec S25 about three months ago, BUT I probably won't replace it for about five years, which is my usual pattern: buy the newest, highest-spec model outright on a SIM-only plan, but it has to earn its dinner for a decent amount of time thereafter.

Okiedokie123 · 08/10/2025 22:36

I’ve had mine since 20006 but it was gifted to me by someone who’d bought another so I guess it’s 20 years plus. 😎
it’s dinky and I love it, I really annoyed that if I still want to have a mobile. I’m going to have to ditch it and switch to a modern one. They all seem so huge! And expensive.
Currently I spend about £30 a year payg which suits me perfectly. Sigh.

MrsEMR · 08/10/2025 22:39

Upgraded 6 months ago. Previous phone was 6 years old, had gotten very slow & it struggled to hold a charge.

intrepidpanda · 08/10/2025 22:42

About 5 years. It still responds fine and charge lasts 4 or 5 days. So I don't see me getting replacement soon.
It was about £150 new too.
Don't understand these expensive phones and contract where phones last a year and need charged daily.
