My friend had a souvenir mug from studying abroad but its where she met her husband so she kind of loves it sees it as a momento (hope i spelled that right aha!)

It fell out of the dishwasher the other night and smashed she was gutted. But shes said she has found one used on vinted. The seller said barely and there's no drink stains so she bought it as she Just loves looking at it while she drinks. Brings back good memories

I never thought people would sell used mugs! I've bought used clothes but would you buy a used mug?

I assume some fairy liquid and clean in boiled water and its good as new ?

If you've ever drank any drink in a sit down cafe or restaurant, the cups and glasses will have been used by hundreds of other people.

Just put it through dishwasher or wash by hand with other dishes.

SkaneTos · 08/10/2025 12:12

If she is happy with it, I think that's great! It must have been a very dear mug to her.

In my home country Sweden, many people collect Moomin mugs, because they like them and/or because they are collectibles, some are more valuable. People buy them online, and I'm sure many of the mugs are used before.

Have you ever been to a cafe or restaurant? It’s quite usual to be drinking out of a mug that many others have drunk out of. 😕

Oh my word - yep ive been to plenty lol. I didnt even think of this!

She did then go through her vinted and showed me all sorts she'd bought i just thought it was clothes but its home stuff and everything. Certainly opens up my world of shopping lol

I am so glad she found the exact one though :)

I've bought mugs in charity shops and at car boot sales in the past - sold a few myself when I did a boot sale. I see no problem as long as the design isn't faded/scratched and there are no cracks or stains.

Whyjustwhy83 · 08/10/2025 12:15

No issue with buying a used mug I've seen people selling used water bottles kind of find that grim with the straws.

You can everything on Vinted, I love it. It’s especially good for Christmas decorations.

I think it's unlikely I'd be so attached to a mug I'd hunt down a replacement, as that's not me, but I don't have any hygiene concerns re using crockery that's been washed since the last use.

I'd imagine your friend is thrilled to have found it and can't see why you would be anything else for her.

splim · 08/10/2025 12:18

Charity shops always seem to have them.

Have to say I don't think I've ever bought one second hand, but it is the kind of thing that gets given as gifts a lot so you don't run short of. How lovely that your friend found her replacement.

Hi i am thrilled! If you read my post. I was giving backstory as to why I asked

This was more me realising you can get more than just clothes on vinted. Lol

Bought a load of Emma Bridgewater mugs second hand, put through dishwasher - good as new!

bought an entire Denby dinner service second hand and several bits to a discontinued Royal Doulton dinner service second- including bits from a charity shop

No issues with second hand unless it’s toiletries, makeup or underwear!

snoopyfanaccountant · 09/10/2025 21:48

I wouldn't have a problem with it.

When we got married, we chose a particular M&S range as our "good" china with the intention of adding to our set. Unfortunately M&S discontinued it shortly afterwards but I have managed to add to it over the years with charity shop finds (plates, bowls, serving dishes, a butter dish, salt and pepper, spoon rest). The dishwasher deals with it.
DD(25) is getting married next year and she finds it very amusing that her fiancé's parents have the same M&S "good" china.

BellissimoGecko · 09/10/2025 21:53

Of course!! Why not?

tinyspiny · 09/10/2025 21:59

Personally I wouldn’t buy a second hand mug as I can’t see the point and in the case in question surely the sentiment was attached to the actual mug not just any mug which looks like it .

Yousuns · 09/10/2025 22:02

I have bought a teacup from Vinted and various glasses. A lot of them arrived broken though! I did get my money back for the teacup. The glasses I didn't bother getting the money back for as it was very little.

No issues with it being secondhand, but just bear in mind that it may not get to her in one piece. Not sure why I had such bad luck

pokewoman · 09/10/2025 22:04

90% of my mugs are second hand from charity shops, carboots, free sites. We are a clumsy household, and also fairly eco conscious so id much rather buy second hand.

Wash them up before we use them (dont have a dishwasher!)

Bonbon249 · 09/10/2025 22:11

Have bought and sold a number of mugs on eBay. As others have said some are quite collectable. Give them a good wash and they're fine.

You are asking people if they would buy a used mug, not saying did you realise you can buy used mugs?!? Sounds more like you don’t think she should have bought it, or that you wouldn’t have bought it.

Doone22 · 10/10/2025 21:28

It's weird you are even posting. Why on earth do you care whether she uses a second hand mug?

caringcarer · 10/10/2025 21:31

Once it's been through the dishwasher I doubt you'd know it was not the very same mug. Good she found one the same. I've bought some vintage bone china on eBay and I'm very happy with it.
