Flu jab side effects?

Had flu vaccine on Thursday afternoon, came down with cold symptoms Friday lunchtime, been ill since, now Sunday morning.

Anyone else had this reaction? Or is it likely to be a cold? Been blocked up, sneezing, headachey, unable to do much as I feel weak/tired.

I had something similar recently.

Have been paying for the flu jab privately for 8 years now. Never had any reaction except a dead arm.

Was a bit cold and had a runny nose the day before the jab, but no fever. So had it done. That night temperature went up. Head started banging. I basically had every symptom you can imagine.

Turns out it was Covid 😕

Sounds like an unrelated cold.

I've been having flu jabs since 1995 (just realised that is 30 years!).

The very first one, I had terrible flu days after. I was really ill. DS was a toddler, so I had to stay at my parents, as I couldn't even get out of bed. Then DS got it, so did my dad. It was flu and it must have been brewing. The jab does not contain the live virus, so it would have been impossible to spread to others.

Unlike the nasal vaccine, which does contain the live virus, and can be spread via shedding.

I've felt really ill a few times after in the 30 years of having them. The majority I haven't been at all though. So I can really confidently say, that it does not give you flu.

The vaccine takes up to two weeks to work, so it's possible to catch flu before it works. Your body's own immune system can also make you feel ill, depending on how it responds to the vaccine.

It's so hard to tell. My feeling is that this must be a cold I'd already been exposed to, as I wouldn't expect a flu jab reaction to go on for days.

I've had the flu jab for years and last year had a reaction for the first time, but it was only fir about 24 hours and was more feeling weak and woozy, not cold symptoms.

It's annoying as I'm self-employed and will have to take time off work tomorrow (work with vulnerable people/carer), in case it's something contagious, rather than the vaccine!

The flu vaccine isn’t a live vaccine and can’t give you flu BUT it takes up to 2 weeks for immunity to kick in so, if you are ill after a flu jab, you would have been ill anyway, even if you’d never had the jab in the first place.

It can cause a temperature, sore arm and aching in your muscles. This can last a couple of days. If it’s longer than that then you have caught something else.

Wishing you a speedy recover op, but it certainly is the season for it, and there is loads of the new covid variant about at the minute too! 🤒

DCs both had the nasal spray Thursday. Both came down with sore throats and a headache. Gone by last night. That’s never happened before for them and one is particularly susceptible to everything going

Notagain75 · 05/10/2025 12:51

I had a sore arm and was a bit tired, slight temperature the next day then fine

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 05/10/2025 12:53

I had the jab on Friday and today I'm headachy and snotty and sneezy. Ds was ill and passed out to DH who has been bad all week so it'll just be my turn. Nothing to do with the vaccine, just rotten luck.

ShowOfHands · 05/10/2025 12:54

Around half of our students had a flu spray last week. Dozens have since become ill, many already were ill. Pretty even split between being immunised and not. It's because it's Sept/Oct and COVID, flu and other viruses are absolutely rife amongst children and adults. It's nothing to do with the vaccine.

Curlewcurfew · 05/10/2025 13:12

Sounds like it's just a damn cold!

Likelihood is it’s a coincidence given the time of year. Had my flu jab yesterday, all good so far!

mindutopia · 05/10/2025 13:16

If runny nose and sneezing, it’s quite likely to be a cold.

I had flu jab on Thursday. I’m immunocompromised, going through cancer treatment. I feel tired and achy with a bit of a headache. Normally have no reaction, but I feel everything worse now.

If your body is busy building an immune response to the flu though, it’s not surprising you feel worse having a cold at the same time.

Baileysandcream · 05/10/2025 13:21

I had my flu jab on Thursday and aside from an achey arm, I haven't noticed any side effects at all. Feeling a bit tired, but that's not unusual for me.

thebeautifulsky · 05/10/2025 13:22

Had the flu vaccine for the past ten years as I was in early years education and previously caught the flu every other year! No side effects apart from sore arm and a bit off for a day or two. Way better than full on flu imo.

functionoverform · 05/10/2025 13:24

Had the flu vaccine last Saturday, only side effects was a very painful arm - surprisingly painful! In previous years have had a temp afterwards for a few hours but nothing this year. I would say you are unlucky!

zingally · 05/10/2025 13:27

Most likely an unrelated cold. I had mine yesterday morning, and apart from a bit of a sore arm through yesterday, I'm feeling fine today.
I've been having the private flu jab for 10 years plus, and have never had any ill effects other than a sore arm. The first few years of having it, I used to get a sore arm that would go on for days. But the last few years, not so much. Makes me think they've changed one of the ingredients or something.

Vates · 05/10/2025 13:42

I had mine this morning and just a sore arm so far. It was the same the previous years too. Hope you feel better soon!
