What to call my male kitten

I am collecting sibling 5 month old kittens this week. Both are black. I have a name for the female - Margot - but less sure for the tom. Any ideas? I do like old-fashioned human names for pets and already have a cat called Stella.

Arthur

Got to be Gerry. 🙂

You might be too young to remember a comedy many years ago called 'The Good Life'.

There was a couple called Margo and Richard.

So Richard or Dick 😁

Why are so many people saying Jerry/Gerry?

What am I missing?

I mean how does it go with Margot and Stella?

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 05/10/2025 23:07

The good life. Sitco
From the 70/80s

Neighbours were Margot and Jerry and were by far the best characters.

Richard Briers was the actor who played Tom in The Good Life and Paul Eddington played Jeremy/Jerry.

Oooh that makes perfect sense, thanks! Blush

Obviously Jerry. No debate to be had really.

80smonster · 05/10/2025 23:49

Artemis or Aslan. Or Arthur if you’re feeling really boring. I find cats named after comedy duos really yawnsome.

I’m a mega fan of The Good Life but I’m not keen on whimsical names for pets - I might make an exception for goldfish. If you want a pairing the ballet option suggested above is more dignified. Rudolf would be my choice.

AllFours · 06/10/2025 00:23

Orson, Margot & Stella
😻

MercyChant66 · 06/10/2025 01:25

For a more literary pairing, how about Stanley to go with Stella?

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 06/10/2025 13:11

The Good Life is being repeated on one of the freesat channels. Still funny all these years later.

Richard Briers was a tremendous talent although the character of Tom was a bit tepid. He was magnificent in Ever Decreasing Circles. If we could start again with the naming I’d break my own rule about whimsical names and pick Howard and Hilda.

cheapskatemum · 06/10/2025 21:18

Apparently the character of Tom was written with Richard Briers in mind. I can still remember some of the storylines of episodes of The Good Life all these years later.

Sorry to hijack your thread op! Did you decide on a name for him?

TheMAFSfan · 07/10/2025 05:17

Salem 😀

I'm sorry to have not responded to any of these suggestions - I posted this from a Premier Inn unable to sleep before dropping ds1 off at uni for the first time and he woke up too just after I posted. DS2 suggested Max for boy cat so we have gone with that, though my fave was Orson. I thought I better come back and post a pic but Max won't keep still long enough for a decent photo and his sister won't come out from behind the sofa! Anyway, here is a blurred photo of him (he has scarring on his eyelid).
