Three kids.

Two beds worth of bedding
swim towels and all the other used towels
school uniforms
other clothes

it’s not even like I don’t do any in the week

Just a normal day in my household but never expected any different, the joys of sporty kids. 4 loads is an easy day.

TomatoSandwiches · 04/10/2025 17:06

I tend to do an average of 2 per week day as a family of 5, we have an ASD smearer so extra on weekends anyway but we have a good sized utility and tumble dryer, couldn't really cope without that tbh or we would have washing up in every room like bunting 😂
Love a good wash day when it can go on the line though.

Porkrice · 05/10/2025 16:17

I do 1 or 2 loads a week.
Depends on what i have to wash.
Childfree single and live alone.

I once posted on a thread that I only need to do one load a fortnight, occasionally two. People got weirdly angry and were demanding I list everything 😄 'what about gym clothes and flannels and tea towels?!' er...I don't use any of those.
(Childfree home)

Same I do two loads a week…family of 4…10/11kg washing machine. People got so insulted that it was possible 🤣🤣

It’s just the bedding/towels thing I don’t get… that’s 2 loads by itself!

And before anyone asks.
yes my dc play sports
yes I do one load of bedding per week…we shower daily so do not change pjs every night.
I washed about 8 towels, a set of bedding, uniforms, clothing and sports gear etc etc. I do it all on a Saturday as I have free electricity on Saturdays

Thissickbeat · 05/10/2025 16:46

Load 3 today. All on washing line.
Me and DS are going to the gym more lately so laundry never stops. Doesn't help that I only have one comfortable pair of gym leggings so try to wash them overnight.

IAmThePrettiestManOnMyIsland · 05/10/2025 16:47

My washing machine and tumble dryer are basically never off.

Seawolves · 05/10/2025 16:52

It's been a light week for washing this week, just three loads over the weekend. Some weeks are a nightmare, my little one has a specialist sleep system and some weeks his sheet is wet every night, we only get two and they are a heavy, bamboo fabric that is impossible to get dry easily. I can't use bedmats to prevent the wetting through and even in a nappy with an incontinence pad inside he can be wet from his neck to his ankles so I need to wash that sheet every day.

1AnotherOne · 05/10/2025 16:53

I’m on the 5th load. Just me and DP but washing all the bedding, blankets and cushion covers. Thank god for the tumble dryer!

MaturingCheeseball · 05/10/2025 16:59

When I go to America I hug their big top loaders and tumble driers. Everything done in 40 minutes, unlike the flippin’ things here which trundle on for hours.

Dh’s friend (single) said recently he uses the w/m once a fortnight. “What about the bedding?” I ask. There was an awkward silence. I knew it - he changes them once a year 😬

I guess it depends how much of the stuff you own too. My middle DD plays hockey 3 times a week but the kit is expensive so she only has one set, and it needs washing after every session.
My youngest is autistic and his clothes are trashed after a day at school. He also does forest school one day a week and he honestly looks like he’s been in a swamp after a day there. If it didn’t go straight in the washing machine I’m not sure where I’d keep it! Eldest DD trains in her sport 4 times a week so that stuff has to be washed mid week too. With school uniform x 3, my work clothes, DH’s work clothes, both of our gym stuff, kids sport stuff (including swimming kits x 3), towels, tea towels and 4 x bedding sets it’s easily a load a day. I’d love to only do 2 a week!

nicky2512 · 05/10/2025 17:26

My ds has gone away to uni and I can’t believe how much less washing I have!! (Gym, swimming etc). Only problem is now I’m paying a fiver a go for him to do his own in thieving circuit laundry 🤣

Barely need to buy milk any more either but that’s another story!

SafeSex · 05/10/2025 17:30

Is it a clean load or a dirty load that you're in?

Does he buy a set of new sheets once a year for the bed change?

Darner · 05/10/2025 17:34

It’s been only me and my husband here all week and today he’s done 3 loads. Towels, dog towels and a general colours load.

We tumble dry everything, so no need for ‘drying’ weather.

Dippythedino · 05/10/2025 17:39

You've all reminded me to put a delayed wash on tonight before I go to bed so I can hang it out before work.

I only do one load of clothes per week, and a bed linen and towel wash about every 10 - 14 days,so averages out at about 1.5 loads a week. I live alone, don't go to the gym or swimming,so this is why I don't have a massive amount of laundry. Like you,I once posted on Mumsnet that this was all I did,and some people didn't seem to believe me! After years of having to do a load nearly every day,it's nice now to only have to deal with it once a week, especially as I have a disability and health issues that make me exhausted.I would think it a bit odd if a person living alone was having to do multiple loads of washing a week!

limescale · 05/10/2025 17:48

TheNightingalesStarling · 04/10/2025 16:01

But you must have bedding? My bed alone is one whole wash, before you start on clothes...

(Its usually a wash per person(but mixed together), a load for each bed, and an extra load if school uniform week here)

We are a household of 2. We have more than one set of bedding per bed/person so I add bits of a bedding set to various loads until it's all done.
e.g. if the lights have been building up since the last dark wash, but I don't have enough for a whole load, a few pillowcases or the bottom sheet gets chucked in.
Likewise towels - just put one in when there's room in the regular clothes wash.

We do one a day but I gave separating colours. I put all of them together to streamline things and wash all at 40 degrees so no issue mixing the colours. Similar to you, 3 young kids & me & my partner.

Snuppeline · 05/10/2025 17:51

Washing machine on 3-4 days of the week here but trend to do 1-2 loads each on those days. And if I’m not washing in bloody well folding. Five people, three children, two of whom are teenagers and one 12 year old. There is PE/gym clothes, bedding, towels and ballet clothes, whites, colored and Willie’s. Sometimes the children stick a wash on if I’m slow with something they want or to help out. My laundry room is nearly impossible to get into. Used to love the feeling of getting things done/clean but it’s just overwhelming now.

Dr13Hadley · 05/10/2025 18:07

I’m jealous OP! I have loads of washing to do but my washing machine is being a twat and won’t spin so until I get it seen to the washing will be piling up! I wanted to do bedding and football strips this weekend. Well not wanted but you know what I mean!

Ah yeah we have plenty of kit for training, they can train in any gear. Only wear team kits for matches as such. But I suppose if I had a smaller washing machine etc it would be 3-4 loads. It just always fits in two. This week though I did have to put it on a third time as I had a cardigan that needed a hand wash cycle.

itsmeafterall · 05/10/2025 18:29

I've recently retired and only have 1DC at home (he does his own washing).

So the constant hum of the machine has quietened somewhat. I'm using my new found leisure time to reinvent myself as a domestic goddess (after many years as a corporate slave). So after a holiday last week I've delightfully spent the last 2 days doing 6/7 loads and getting them all dried, ironed and put away. Very very satisfying.

Posting this not to be smug but to show that there is light at the end of the endiess washing tunnel - eventually.
