NHS Redeployment

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of being redeployed (NHS)?

I'm a registered nurse currently off sick with MH and have decided to contact HR to discuss redeployment as I do not want to go back to a ward setting.

At first I felt a sense of relief as I'm finally cutting ties with ward work. But now I'm worrying... in 3 months time if I do not find a role I will be dismissed... like everybody else I have mortgage/bills to pay. What if I don't find a job? I've just been looking and not many jobs are available at the moment due to a recruitment freeze. I have seen a Ward Discharge Coordinator and Clinical Governance Coordinator but these are a lower band.

Thank you for any help.

You can’t expect them to pay you if you aren’t capable of doing the job you are paid for, and hopefully a job that suits you comes up.

Awful that so many newly qualified can’t get jobs when so many nhs staff are off sick so wards are really understaffed and their coworkers are running on empty.

With all respect, you do not know the context behind this or what has hexactly happened to cause the sickness. You are very judgemental plus I am the one that has requested redeployment to get back into work. I specifically asked if anyone has any experience of it and you haven't.

Or are you a newly qualified nurse that cannot secure a job that's why you are so bitter? Or your children?

How much of a paycut? I don’t blame you for being worried if you’ve only got 3 months and there’s a recruitment freeze. Plus the job market in general at the moment isn’t great so between that and the time of year there’s probably less people leaving too.

Could you afford to live on the lower wage? Check if you would be entitled to universal credit. If you could afford to live on it then it’s worth applying and then looking for promotions so you can return to a higher salary.

Hi, first of all thank you for you being understanding and helpful.
I could live on a Band 4 wage, I think perhaps that is the best idea as you said and then as I get into working again and find my feet apply for a higher banding later on.

Sorry you've received such an unhelpful first response!

I used to work in NHS HR and have managed many ill health redeployments. Obviously I don't know your trust, so don't know what kind of services they provide.

Firstly, have a good think about whether it's a no to all wards, or just the one you were on before - might there be a ward that works for you? If not, does your trust provide any community services?

It's a numbers game - how many of the type of roles you're willing to consider are there within the Trust? The broader the potential pool of roles, the better the chances of a vacancy in one of them. Also keep looking out for vacancies in neighbouring trusts whilst you're on redeployment and apply if there are any you like the look of.

NHS trusts generally don't want to lose qualified staff, but if the potential pool of roles for you is very limited, dismissal at the end of the redeployment period can happen. It is also worth looking at vacancies in GP surgeries.

Best of luck!
