What’s wrong with them?

Why are they any better than our current ID forms?

Honestly would love to understand more. I can’t really get worked up about them…. But then also feel they’re probably a massive waste of money right now. What do you all think?

I'm wondering how those without a passport or driving licence will prove their identity, will they have to have known a business person or a professional for 2 years or an upstanding member of the community. Good luck with that with a lot of people.

Zuve · 03/10/2025 17:54

I do think it's good. It will have many uses and help keep us safe. It's really not a big deal and not reducing our freedoms.

How will it keep us safe

PersephoneParlormaid · 03/10/2025 18:13

If I’ve already got a job, can my company make me have one to continue working for them?

How will it keep us safe and how you do know it won't reduce your freedom in 5 or 10 yrs?

Crikey. I’m very much awake. I’ve been on two of these threads now and I hope they exist in 10 years time so that we can reconvene and see if there was ever a need for a tin foil hat.

And we would be happier to say we were wrong than we told you what would happen.

ToodleP1P · 03/10/2025 18:18

They say it is to stop illegal workers, but we already have systems in place for that and hefty fines for employers who are caught. This is not going to deter them. They will find other ways, they always do.
I wish they would not call it ID, because it is not ID. It will be a way to access things like jobs, benefits, NHS etc the list goes on. No "ID" no benefits, no job, no healthcare.
They say it wont be compulsory but your life will be extremely limited without it.

The petition response is also a joke.

Cherrycola4 · 03/10/2025 18:23

Wouldn’t you have to show proof of ID to get one? Bit tricky if, like me, you don’t have a passport or driving licence.

HilaryThorpe · 03/10/2025 18:25

Apologies if this has been posted, but it is quite a good starting place to read what is actually planned.

We are not China! We are far from this. We follow a set of rules and values that don’t just stem from the UK but the UN and in some cases the EU. Stop the scaremongering.

Not like China yet! Their ideas of control may be adopted or modified to suit. The UN don't get involved and we aren't in Europe anymore. Some politicians want us out of the ECHR so that's your rights to what you had gone. What are these rules/values and where are they written down?

Edited

We are in Europe 🙄 but we’re not in the EU. We still trade and deal with EU and therefore need to behave in line with their set of values.

What are the values and rules I talk about?

I don’t know - take a pick www.legislation.gov.uk/explore/legislatures/uk

Govt legislation can be changed at anytime or with the wrong Government swept aside

It’s so hard to pass a bill. Look at assisted dying - it’s been a year now and it’s still being debated. If the Gov was so bad and in it for themselves it would be an easy business decision for them. The people who would be eligible are not in employment, they qualify for lots of state benefits, they aren’t splurging on goods and services - what a saving. But here we are, carefully considering each side of the coin in order to do the right thing morally, ethically and with humanity in mind.

As I said before - this is about PROVING your identity and civil status and ACCESSING systems that YOU might need access too. No-one is going to join all the systems in the UK together in a big database the govt can use to control you. This is just ridiculous. GDPR means data can only be stored and used where and by whom it is relevant to do so. Data on health, religious or political beliefs, sexuality, etc is consider sensitive data and should be strictly controlled. Noone can use digital ID to spy on your tesco shop to see if you are buying too much wine, or infiltrate your scales to see if you are too fat. The ID is used to PROVE WHO YOU ARE, for anyone with a legitimate reason to ask - e.g, an employer, your bank, the hospital, at a polling booth, and can be used by YOU to access things where such a check might be needed, such as accessing your tax records, or your online bank. I have never heard so much bollocks being spouted about this.

You haven't read the details of this have you?

Your understanding is flawed.

GDPR doesn't apply to the government.

PersephoneParlormaid · 04/10/2025 06:45

The link says that it’s going to be free, but it’s not free to the tax payer.
And if you want to find a lot of males working illegally, start by checking those Just Eat delivery drivers who whizz about on electric bikes ignoring the rules of the road.

Pedallleur · 04/10/2025 08:21

There is some idea this scheme will keep us safe and be only used for X or Y but since we don't know the details (or cost) how do we know? What are the parameters and what can be added without informing us? My windows has various tick boxes that allow certain functions. Might not want them but if I do they can be added. Who is accessing this data, how is it read? What safeguards will be in place? Be careful what you wish for. But all we know is Digital ID is being touted as a panacea to everything. Years ago there was the idea of the paperless office or jet packs for everyone. I'm still waiting!!

Yes but look at the mission creep of traffic camera's-

First we are told it is to protect us from speeding but now varients of them are being used to force cars to comply with green targets which are a bit dubious and often seem like a money grab:
The ULEZ zone charges cars made before 2015 £12.50 for being 'non -complient'.
There has been barely any discernable increase in quality to air quality but it has raised £875 million from (usually the less well off-can't afford a new car) members of the public.
That is mission creep based on access to technology.
I'm sure in a few years diesil and petrol cars will be taxed in the same way.

This is just one example. Mission creep against freedom of speech-
Police forces in Britain recorded 13,200 ‘non-crime hate incidents’ (NCHIs) in the year to June 2024, according to freedom of information responses.
Access to banking- people are already de-banked for their views (Nigel Farage -Coutts scandal showed many people are de-banked due to low credit scores which can be arbitary)

Digital ID could end up a soft China style system where you get sancttioned for low credit scores and find it harder, not easier to access services.

Um yes I have - and data protection laws also apply to the govt. There are limited reasons where personal data can be shared without your permission and these are generally related to legal / crime type issues.

There’s been a huge increase in the quality of air in London actually!

And the ULEZ cameras are different from speed cameras.

The Government make the laws!

They can change anything they like. We follow laws, the government doesn't.

Don't be so naive.

For years… and AI / data use has moved on.

MissAmbrosia · 05/10/2025 11:16

And becomes more and more regulated. Honestly if the UK is going to go all North Korea at some future point, I think ID will be the last thing you'll be worrying about.
