Facebook Scammers - why is it always sofas??

I’ve been browsing furniture on marketplace recently as we’re hopefully moving soon and won’t have much spare cash for the new furniture we’ll need. Almost every sofa advertised is an obvious scam! The clues are there, the seller only joined Facebook this year, delivery usually offered, pictures often clearly not where we live (US plug sockets visible or overhead power lines outside the window, there’s none where we are).

Why is it sofas specially that scammers start their scams with? Baffled!

No idea what you're talking about but maybe this explains why nobody wanted that other posters sofa.

No idea but I’ve seen exactly what you mean. I was after a metal garden shed and they seem to be the same, all advertised at a random £61 or £62

Ive been thinking the same! All these new sofas, photos obviously taken from the Internet and all free. I can't figure out what the scam is and why?!

I’ve heard of someone buying one of these sofas, they turned up with it very late at night and demanded more money

Where I live it’s wire sculptures for your garden that’s always being advertised on fb. You pay a deposit then they vanish. It’s such an obvious scam. That or oven cleaning.

I’m tempted to start enquiring about them via my alternate account (I keep an empty profile with a fake name to access our business pages). See if can uncover how it is they’re trying to scam people. Paying for delivery in advance maybe and then obviously not turning up.

We have lots of sofa ads in our area too. They're really annoying to scroll through.

CheeseWisely · 02/10/2025 21:08

When I come to advertise our old too small one I’ll stick a copy of that day’s local paper on it to prove it’s real Grin

I had an issue with a fridge freezer? They tried to get me to sign for it before it was in the door….showed me “something” under a blanket in a van that clearly wasn’t a fridge freezer…refused to sign for it and they drove off…I guess they’d then have my address and signature id id signed so could they use that for fraudulent loans or something?
