Eat within two days?

The big pots of Greek yoghurt take me ages to get through. A couple of spoons a day isn't enough to use it all up within two days, so I'll keep using it for five, maybe six days. Will I die? I haven't yet!

I’ve been doing 3
Or 4 days for years. Still alive. Expect someone will tell us off shortly

Ciderapplevinegar · 01/10/2025 20:20

You'll be fine, but why not just buy the smaller ones and have fresher yoghurt?

warmapplepies · 01/10/2025 20:23

Yoghurt lasts forever. It's fine.

soundsofthevalley · 01/10/2025 20:25

I’m a bit puzzled where you are buying this yogurt, which needs eating in 2days. I buy from any supermarket that’s handy, the big 500g pots of thick Greek yogurt. They universally have use by dates about 2-3 weeks out. On my own, I can easily use one in that time frame.

“once opened, eat within 2 days” has nothing to do with the use by date.

Once you open it, bacteria are introduced and it won’t last 2 or 3 weeks. Well, it might but it also might not. And they don’t want to risk people becoming unwell due to bacterial growth in the product once you open the sealed container. So they put that warning on it. Up to you if you eat it after longer or not. I’ve never died and usually give it 4 days.

It's not to do with the use by date though - it's because once they're opened, you're supposed to eat them within 2-3 days.

blankcanvas3 · 01/10/2025 20:38

I haven’t died yet either and I keep yoghurt open for up to seven days

FunMustard · 01/10/2025 20:41

I use mine until it starts looking gross tbh. At least a week, probably two or more. It has live cultures in it, and I'm not introducing bacteria as I dish it out (although of course I recognise stuff floating about in the fridge might introduce itself).

Also still alive Grin

Honestly I tend to lead with my nose and eyes rather than written dates.

PotassiumPermanganate · 01/10/2025 21:00

Thanks all. As usual, I know it makes sense to give it a sniff and if it's ok it's ok, just wanting reassurance and confirmation 😅 I've never seen Greek yoghurt in anything smaller than the 500 pots, but ds just uses it in his protein shakes so it's a couple of spoonfuls per day.
Thanks all!

Tesco does do their basic one in individual pots, but not the fancier one which I prefer. Sometimes I buy those for ease.

Canicule · 01/10/2025 21:09

Without wanting to be an Elevenerifer... I've kept one tub of plain greek yogurt going for 3 months.
It never went off - I'm sure 90% of MN would be horrified.

space99 · 01/10/2025 21:23

I have eaten some Greek yoghurt today that I opened ten days ago. Do it all the time and never had any issues.

sammyspoon · 01/10/2025 21:25

2 weeks definitely. I’m still alive. I only don’t eat it if it’s growing something on it.

TheChosenTwo · 01/10/2025 21:28

Oh god we buy the 1litre tubs of Yeo valley plain stuff (good for all sorts of stuff) and it lasts longer than a week if we don’t finish the whole lot just fine. Just obviously use a clean spoon and don’t double dip other ingredients in the yoghurt!

Hobbitfeet32 · 01/10/2025 21:33

Sometimes weeks. If it doesn’t have mould on it and smells/tastes ok then I eat it.

HScully · 01/10/2025 21:35

Weeks... even been known to scrape around the green mould if its just a tiny bit .. Red mould puts me right off though.

I am alive and have a brilliant immune system

Owly11 · 01/10/2025 21:37

Greek yoghurt will last 7-10 days easily.

BadActingParsley · 02/10/2025 15:47

2/3 weeks, probably longer sometimes. Greek style yoghurt comes in smaller pots.

ThirdStorm · 02/10/2025 15:47

2 weeks is my max for open greek yogurt, it generally starts growing at that point.

Same here. This morning I made double cream that had been open for about a fortnight and had an expiry date of 12 September into sticky toffee sauce so it could go in the freezer and not get wasted. It was fine.

OP you've answered your own question, you've not yet died from ignoring the 2 day rule, so you're unlikely to in the future.

These instructions are to account for the people who use dirty cutlery, or eat straight out of the pot or who's fridge doesn't work. Plus they don't want complaints from those sorts of people if their yogurt goes mouldy, which it probably won't anyway.

It's terrible because they're encouraging people who are unable to think for themselves to throw away perfectly good food by the 2 day instruction. If they actually cared about reducing food waste which they don't because they want you to throw it away and buy more then they'd not have an instruction like that. Don't fall for it.

The smaller ones work out more expensive and yogurt that's been open a couple of days is no less fresh than one that was opened today.

Iliketulips · 02/10/2025 17:06

I buy fat free natural and greek yogurt 500g and have three spoonfuls every other day, never even bothered about having to eat it soon as long as it's in sell day date and looks/tastes ok.

OdeToTheNorthWestWind · 02/10/2025 17:19

I have the natural, authentic greek yoghurt (not "greek style", which are an abomination!) and a 500g tub takes me up to a week to get through. I'm sure the bacteria already in them will see off any that can sneak in from just opening the pot😁

garlictwist · 02/10/2025 17:20

I sometimes wonder this. It takes me abot a week to get through a pot of yoghurt. It's not vacuum sealed so I don't think it really matters when it's been opened.
