A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic - worth it!?

I really want to take the children to see a Christmassy show this year, and this one looks amazing…but £185 a ticket 😱

We hardly ever go on holiday so I have the budget….but is it worth it? Has anyone been?

I'm surprised at the price but when I went a few years ago it was incredible and I would love to go again. I think I only paid about £40 a seat though, is that really the cheapest available?

WellErrr · 01/10/2025 13:46

Yes, I think it’s because I’ve left it too late. My fault!

I haven't seen it, but a panto might be more fun.

Are you actually in London? I mean, wherever you are there are Christmas shows so there are other options.

I love theatre and could see me paying £185 to treat myself. I wouldn't be paying that for kids as I doubt they'd get £185 worth of enjoyment out of it.

Beekman · 01/10/2025 13:54

How old are your kids?

Larsaleaping · 01/10/2025 13:58

Maybe go next year and find something else this year. It's definitely worth going though, it's immersive and magical and the most festive thing I've ever seen.

WellErrr · 01/10/2025 14:01

The kids are 13, 11 and 9. We don’t live in London so it would be a real treat that they’d remember forever hopefully. It’s been a difficult time just lately and I want to give them a real treat. But I don’t know if I’m being silly.

Could you go in the period between Christmas and New Year? It looks like there's cheaper tickets available and London is relatively nice and quiet to visit then. I think it would work well seeing it then even though it's set on Christmas Eve, it's just so magical and joyful. And they give you mince pies on the way in.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 01/10/2025 14:06

I'd suggest the panto at the Hackney Empire if your eldest wouldn't find the idea too cringe. It's top notch of its type with no ex-soap stars etc and an amazing Dame in Clive Rowe. It makes me feel so very Christmassy.

WellWoman · 01/10/2025 14:09

It's a really fabulous production...but that price is a bit too rich for most of us. As suggested above, can you go on a night when some better price tickets are available?

They will almost certainly do it again next year (perhaps ask them), and you could put a diary note to yourself to book when they start selling next year if you're keen. I thought it was lovely, as did rest of the family, and have recommended it several times - but we certainly didn't pay anything like £185 per person.

Wethers121 · 01/10/2025 14:10

I’d do the panto instead. My children absolutely love it!

WellErrr · 01/10/2025 14:46

I don’t think I could sit through panto 🙈🤣

Think I’ll have a look about for something else and book earlier next year.

Not at all silly to want to give your kids a treat.

Where are you/where can you get to? I mean for that price you could have four tickets to see The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe in Manchester (£150 for 4 stalls tickets) and afford a night away to do it.

Sinkingfeeling952 · 01/10/2025 14:49

It is very good - one of the best things I’ve seen - but I definitely didn’t pay that!

OhDear111 · 01/10/2025 14:57

Try 30th December. Half that price!

shadylane · 01/10/2025 15:03

It’s absolutely brilliant and worth it if you c and afford it. If not, wait for next years tickets to go on sale and pick them up for under £100.

blueberrysoap · 01/10/2025 15:06

We went last year and it was absolutely amazing, we all felt very Christmassy after however I would not pay that much and book earlier for next year when the tickets are a lot cheaper!

Catpiece · 01/10/2025 15:06

Went last year. It was expensive but amazing. Not sure it’s for little kids tho x

OhDear111 · 01/10/2025 20:14

@WellErrrDH and me went to Oliver. It’s an amazing production. Tickets are not £185. I pay less than that for the Royal Opera House. It’s at the Gielgud. Fantastic Fagin!

Twilightstarbright · 01/10/2025 21:02

It is amazing but not £185.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/10/2025 21:50

It’s amazing, we go every year. Get on the mailing list and buy the day they’re released. I have front row tickets for this years, bought the first minute they were released at £90 each.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/10/2025 21:50

Last year the snow was cranberry flavoured

Thank you!! Yes I’ll do this for next year 🙂

@WellErrr The tickets are still various prices but maybe not the dates you want? They don’t go up due to demand. They are priced according to position in the theatre. It’s not a dynamic pricing system. Getting in early gives you choice but the best tickets are still £185. The cheaper ones will always sell out as there’s less of them. If you are desperate for the old Vic - get on the mailing list. If it’s a good show - Oliver.
