Want to have a shared account with DH - John Lewis won't work

Beesarestrong · 30/09/2025 13:32

DH has partnership card (credit card) with John Lewis as do I but we want to have another account with 2 cards so that we can use that for food shopping, vehicle repair etc etc. Basically everything that we are jointly responsible for and we'll pay in a sum each month.

JL say only one account per person so who should we go with. I have another current account with First Direct that I don't want to touch.

I think the exact thing you want isn’t available in the UK as, as PPs have said, there is always one person who owns the debt on a credit card. FWIW my DH and I run things like this, we’re unusual in Mumsnet land in that we have separate finances but it works for us:
separate current accounts from which we standing order a set amount into a
joint current account monthly - used for regular bills and mortgage. In addition I have a BA Amex card with DH as a supplementary card holder where we put ad hoc household spending like you describe (and to collect the Avios) and we split the spending in as close to a common sense way as we can without being tight. Ultimately it’s my card so if he chose to take the piss I’d be in trouble but then I guess I’d have other issues to worry about.

This sounds like what we want. We've been married 25 years and just always split things but it is a pain in the neck doing paperwork. Either of us would be happy to be responsible (but DH is very busy) so it will be me.

Thanks all.

We have BA Amex, BA BARCLAY card and starling bank accounts.
we get flight rewards and other perks which is why we do it.

We rotate though which card and person combo has the best offers
one of us will be the main cardholder and The other the supplementary

Amex is the best as it shows you who spends what and the supplementary cardholder can get on the app as well and see their purchases. On Barclaycard the supp card holder has no access to to the app.

We pay the balance weekly.

We Both have starling and a joint starling as well as a high street bank accounts. I love starling.

Beesarestrong · 30/09/2025 18:18

@cinnamonbunlover Ooooh...most interested in Starling. We are so over flying - we go to Europe all the time - that Amex has no interest anymore. Don't think I would like to pay balance weekly though. Is there a monthly option?

OP posts:
cinnamonbunlover · 30/09/2025 23:12

Yes starling is great but it doesn’t have the section 75 protection on purchases (which is why you wanted a CC)

however it is by far the easiest to manage.

AMEX has other benefits than just flying but we specifically use it for long haul holidays but you can select other rewards.

yes it’s normal to pay monthly. Husband lives in fear of the outrageous APR! Which is 107%

Beesarestrong · 03/10/2025 14:32

I phoned Starling and they don't do credit cards. We need that for protection on purchases ( @cinnamonbunlover I just saw your response of 30th).

I've phoned Monzo and can't speak to a person.

Can anyone recommend a second bank account I should get (and get my husband a secondary card). Credit card needed for protection. Already have an account with First Direct. Don't want to go near Santander.

You dont get credit cards on a bank account. If you want a credit card then get a credit card with a card provider you like the look of

You could also set up a joint bank account at the same time in order to deposit the funds to pay for the new credit card that your dh would have an additional card for.

dementedpixie · 03/10/2025 15:01

Looks like monzo needs you both to have a sole bank account with them in order to open a joint account. They do a separate credit card account

dementedpixie · 03/10/2025 15:06

We have a nationwide joint account (and savings accounts and a credit card) and both got Fairer Share payments the last couple of years just for having accounts with them. Free cash!

The credit card we have with them has fee free transactions when using abroad

Yes, this is what I meant too - get a joint bank account to put the funds in. And also get any credit card you like. Then use the joint account to pay off the credit card balance each month.

DP and I have a joint account with Nationwide because one of us already banked there so it was easy to set up an extra account. We don't bother with a special credit card for our purchases because (a) we mainly use it for utility bills and things you don't need a credit card for, but also (b) when we need to use a credit card, we just use our own individual ones and immediately reimburse ourselves from the joint current account.

EverythingElseIsTaken · 03/10/2025 15:08

DH and I have always had completely shared finances. We have two credit cards, John Lewis and Amex (a cashback one) and I am the additional cardholder on both those. We pay off the balance every month. I recently got another card of my own because after nearly 40 years of being the additional cardholder and no longer having a mortgage I realised I should “borrow” some money to help keep a good credit score - I can also buy him gifts without him seeing the spend on the statement!

To be honest neither if us would be comfortable with the idea of “owing” each other anything hence the joint finances. We’ve had periods where only one of us has been earning and even now he earns what I earn several times over….. If we had separate finances we’d have very unequal lifestyles.

Beesarestrong · 30/09/2025 14:11

OK, so one of us has to be "in charge" of the account (me...he's very busy) and then I get a second card for him?

Yes
You can't have joint CCs
One person is the account holder and then other people can have cards
We pay in full every month and use LLoyds as we get cashback

SkipAd · 03/10/2025 15:15

Seems like a terminology thing really.
You can’t have joint credit cards as such, but two cards on the same credit card account, although one is the primary.
The monthly bill includes everything each of you spend. One monthly bill which if you decided was for joint spends only, you’d just split in half to pay.

SevenHundredandFortyThreeThree · 03/10/2025 15:20

Why not just apply for your own JL card if that's who you want to go with?

I have an Amex cashback card which is great but not accepted everywhere.

KrupBrie · 03/10/2025 15:46

Can you not just get a joint current account with first direct to go alongside your individual current account? That's what we do.

We both have individual first direct current accounts plus a joint one. Each month we both pay a set amount based on our earnings from our individual accounts to our joint account.

Then one of us has a sainsburys credit card (for the nectar points!), and the other is a secondary card holder on the credit card, and all our everyday spending goes on that.

Then every month we pay off the sainsburys credit card in full from the first direct joint account.

Easy!

confused...you have a joint First Direct account to go along with your individual First Direct accounts? I googled and thought that was not possible.

I can't understand where Sainsbury bank comes in?

What you're saying makes no sense.

If you want to be able to pay a set amount each month (1k each for example), you need a joint bank account which comes with debit cards.

If you want credit cards, you need to get a new one out, add your dh as a cardholder, then every month make sure you both pay off half of it. Which sounds like more of a faff as you can't do that easily with a direct debit.

You can't both just say oh let's stick 1k each on the credit card. It's not a bank account.

dementedpixie · 03/10/2025 18:52

@Beesarestrong I dont see why you couldn't have a sole account and a joint account with the same bank. Why not contact first direct and ask them or just start an application and see what happens

She is explaining how their credit card is paid off from the money in the joint account. It doesn't have to be sainsbury's; it can be whatever credit card you choose.

CandidLurker · 03/10/2025 20:01

You are not allowed to hold credit balances on credit card accounts any more. it used to be a thing but think it was probably stopped as it could be used for money laundering (pay in cash at the bank to your credit card account and then spend the credit balance on goods and other stuff).

I have joint bank account with my husband. We have separate credit cards which are paid off from the joint bank account. Or you have one credit account with 2 cards. One for the main cardholder and one for the authorised user.
