Earring advice please!

Hi, my DD 15 had her ears pierced over the Easter holidays, at a piercing salon, by hand (ie not a gun)

They were healing up well. A few weeks ago we changed the piercing studs for hoops as her hair kept getting caught on the back of the piercing studs. I carefully chose titanium hoops that were the same diameter as the piercing studs.

Since then she keeps getting yellow discharge from the backs of her holes, and they've gone back to being a bit tender again. There are small lumps by the piercing sites which weren't there before.

Has anyone got any advice? Should I leave them alone and hope they'll heal? Should I swap out the new titanium earrings? I thought titanium would be non-reactive, but maybe I was wrong!

Thanks!

Hoops maybe move too much and are aggravating the piercing. How long were they pierced before they got changed? Were the original earrings flat backed?

I would go back to studs (gold or silver) and bathe her ears every evening in salt water. If you keep on top of it her ears should heal.

I had mine done by hand when I was 11 and I think it was 6 months or so before I wore different earrings.

Where did you get the hoops from? Nickel allergy is quite common and if the earrings are not medical grade titanium then they could be an alloy and contain nickel. I’d put the original studs back in since you know she doesn’t react to those and clean daily again until properly healed.

daily cleaning with salt water (normal salt dissolved in boiled water and allowed to cook) should clear it up.

Titanium barbells are best but she should have been ok to change them by now. It’s possible the new ones aren’t actually titanium or a slightly bigger diameter which is irritating the piercing.

Thanks. It hadn't occurred to me that the hoops might be moving too much. She'd had them pierced for about five months before we changed them, and yes, the piercing ones were flat backed.

She's cleaning them every day with saline spray as recommended by the piercer but they're just not getting any better.
I got her hoops which were the same thickness as her piercing studs, but I think the issue here might be that they weren't proper titanium (even though they were advertised as such). Thanks

I get earrings from piercing mania and tdi body jewellery. Maybe try one with a barbell back to see if it catches less on her hair
