50s - ideas for a new hobby

I fancy doing something else, but not sure what. I think I'd like something where I can meet other people.

At present I like walking (have ruled out a walking group as have tried, one group were walking a very fast pace, the other group much more my pace but I found I was waiting a lot for them on hills). I also enjoy my three exercise classes, jigsaws, reading, cooking and gardening.

Allotment, or is there a nearby therapeutic garden you can volunteer at?

Yamadori · 29/09/2025 15:22

Bonsai? If you are anywhere near Bracknell Leisure Centre this coming Sunday the 5th October, there's a national bonsai show on.

If you like gardening, you'd love it. There are bonsai societies all over the country that hold regular meetings, usually monthly. They have guest speakers and workshops where you can pick up the how-to's from experienced members.

Something in theatre? Am dram or volunteering front of house/behind the scenes. Or improv, that's a very friendly and diverse community (people of all ages). Or join a choir?

Things on my list for this winter:

Air dry clay (tik tok some ideas, it's low maintenance and AMAZING)
Calligraphy
Book binding
Watercolour (by numbers, so quite easy and loads of stunning/modern kits you can actually frame when done)
Cross stitch (again, some cool kits for all types of interests - I want to do a classic book cover)
Walking meditation
Pickling and preserving

IceBrownie · 29/09/2025 15:24

PS: I'm a gardener and will also be inoculating wood stumps with mushrooms this autumn.

Merrow · 29/09/2025 15:27

Board games? My local group has an eclectic group of people and is very welcoming. Quite geeky, admittedly.

BaritoneBetty · 29/09/2025 15:31

Learn a language or musical instrument?

Crochet or latch hooking

Writing (poems, short stories, longer things)

Drawing (items from your garden or house, or views from your walk, or ideas from your imagination)

Restoring old furniture

Volunteering at a library or national trust?

GardenersDelight · 29/09/2025 15:34

Walking netball
I'm 57 and been playing for 3 years and it's the first time I've enjoyed a team sport
It is harder work than the walking name might imply
Also walking tennis, football, rugby and cricket abot

I recommend the allotment, and choir. They are generally friendly if you want that, but also there is no pressure to be really social if you don't.

I took up playing guitar at 50 after a lifetime of no musicality at all.

PearlsPearl · 29/09/2025 16:05

Choir

Volunteering (I do a Foodbank)

I’ve just joined a choir. It’s lovely so far, good mix of different ages and great fun.

Rock Choir is nationwide, no auditions and great fun!

a pub quiz team as you would meet quite a lot of people. Sport wise possibly a park run as posters on here have mentioned they are very social.

Sonolanona · 29/09/2025 21:59

I'm nearly 58.
Took up Squash 6 months ago and now play at least twice a week... our local club is very sociable :)
Got an allotment 2 years ago... love it.
I'm also trying to learn Italian :)

Do you play cards, if so maybe consider bridge?

I started paying mid-40s.
Play once a week at a local club, plus generally once a week at someone's house with just 4 of us.

openmicdrop · 29/09/2025 23:30

Volunteer with a wildlife trust (if they have one in your area). Or volunteering with Riding for the disabled (if you like horses)

Iliketulips · 30/09/2025 13:24

Late 50s here, and in a similar situation and looking for a new hobby. However, everything I've looked at locally seems to be for 65+ - while I'm not against mixing with older people, it'd be nice to have a few more nearer my age/still working.

In the future, I wouldn't mind joining our local bowling and DH would also like to join our local Rummikub group, but you may be more successful in your area. I will have look at the ideas other have given you, and might pinch one!

SemmaLina · 30/09/2025 13:28

I go to a crochet club , from total beginners to really , really clever and talented crocheters
I started in my early 60s , but there’s every age range there
