What's the best way to dry laundry indoors in a 1 bed flat?

Just that really. I have moisture traps everywhere. The bedroom tends to get damp at the best of times - I'm on the ground floor on a reasonably busy road so do keep the windows closed at night, though I do try to remember to put them on the latch during the day. I have a dehumidifier. I do have quite a decent size lounge but try to avoid having laundry hanging around there especially as I wfh and like the space to relax.

I usually put all of the laundry on clothes rails in the hall with the dehumidifier on but only during the day as it's quite noisy. Is that the best thing to do? WDYD if you have limited space? TIA.

You want one of those heated airers. I have one from Lakeland but imagine there are lots around. Put it in your bedroom with a sheet draped over it and the dehumidifier right up close to it. Dries laundry in no time.

Is the hallway ventilated at all? Many flats don’t have any air coming into the hallway and I’d be a bit cautious about drying laundry in there. Have you a bathroom? That could be an option. Or the kitchen area.

Friend has a heated airer and it works great with a dehumidifier.

I have a good dehumidifier and leave it on all day as I WFH.

I did consider a heated airer last year but they have really mixed reviews. And how much of a whole wash would fit in one? I guess I could stagger the load, put some on regular airers while the heated airer dries? How long does it take to dry if you don't mind me asking?

No, the hallway isn't ventilated, hence the dehumidifier. Nothing dries in my bathroom, it's another cold room. My kitchen is small but I can put an airer in there though.

I guess this is probably the answer. I do my laundry Sunday night and wfh Monday in my lounge. Maybe the best thing is to put the laundry in the lounge (the warmest room) on a Monday while I wfh and put the dehumidifier on. Thanks.

Do you have anywhere you could put one of those expanding rails? I have several on the stairs as I have an open front room so all the heat goes on there. I put our things on hangers to dry so I can hang more up

When I don't have space on there I will hang clothes on the bedroom curtain rails and back of doors on ha gers 😅

Davros · 29/09/2025 00:22

Heated airer

Chinsupmeloves · 29/09/2025 00:24

Clothes will dry naturally unless of course in a damp environment. Just a fan can help to circulate air and help them to dry. Xx

Ubugly · 29/09/2025 00:26

I am in a flat but luckily its not damp but I do hang loads on the curtain rail with coat hangers which dries quite quick especially when sun comes through.

beezlebubnicky · 29/09/2025 00:27

A good dehumidifier, don't get a heated airer - they're shit and don't dry as much as a good dehumidifier will. I can get two loads of laundry on two airers dry in less than a day with mine.

StElwicksNeighbourhoodAssociation · 29/09/2025 00:40

Thank you all for your posts. I think I've got it. 4 airers atm - one in the kitchen, one in the bathroom, two in the bedroom overnight. Tomorrow I will put them all in the lounge with the dehumidifier on while I wfh. I wish I had a spare bedroom lol but here we are!

We have a heated airer and, when we hang a cover over it to trap the warmth in, it’s very effective.
I find drying clothes on a mix of the heated airer and a normal airer in the same room (so the normal one gets a bit of extra heat), with a dehumidifier going right next to them, emptied regularly, works the best. It’s fine in a small space with the door closed as it makes the dehumidifier more efficient and keeps the space warm. Dehumidifiers work best if you can contain the damp area. If it’s a larger room you’ll need more powerful ones. They don’t have to be noisy though.

SausageRoll2020 · 29/09/2025 08:33

Heated airer (the one from Lakeland with a cover).
And then tumble dryer for anything that can be tumble dried, sheets and towels always. We have a washer/dryer in one so it doesn't take up anymore room than a washing machine alone.

I do exactly this and it works brilliantly. I also have the Lakeland dryer and it easily takes two loads of laundry.

I live in a flat and keep an airer by a window and whack the window open wide when the airer has clothes on. It's not enough to open it a little crack when you remember, that causes condensation as the wet air has nowhere to escape.

MoonChild111 · 29/09/2025 08:40

I have a dehumidifier with a laundry drying setting. I’m in a one bed flat too & I put it underneath my airer. I also have an extendable airer attached to the bathroom wall that goes across my bath.

flippyflopss · 29/09/2025 08:50

I have a flat i got a tumble dryer.
My last one broke down so had to get a new one.
A quick fix and got a mini one and love it it sits on my kitchen table.
