Hello

my daughter is hoping to go away to uni in September.

I never went to uni (studied locally for my degree) nor did anyone close to me (she would be the first person on her fathers side to EVER go)

as such I have no idea where to start.

can anyone give me some top tips ? Maybe things that arnt common knowledge ect ?

she plans to study paramedic science, would be living on site . Uni fees look to be about 10k a year , and she can get an nhs grant for about half of it .

she currently works in a pub which is part of a chain about 25 hours a week - and has been told she can transfer to another site fairly easily (provided there’s space ect )

we earn less then 50k as a household.

we could give her a small allowance money wise , but would struggle to fund her. - that said she already has a free bus pass (husband is a bus driver) and would be willing/ able to carry on paying her phone bill.

honestly it’s a mine field .

thank you

She would apply for Student Loans though surely @Sundaymorningplans? This would pay the Tuition Fees, although obviously it’s a loan. She may also want to apply for the subsistence loan too as I imagine working to support herself will be difficult when she’s on placement.

Has she visited a few Unis that offer the course? They usually do Open Days.

Oh and the Higher Education section is usually very useful for this kind of thing too if you want to have a look in there Smile

If currently living in England you apply to SFE for a fees and/or maintenance loan. The maintenance loan is assessed on parental income.

If she is at school they normally provide help with uni applications @Sundaymorningplans

Plus if you book to attend open days at the uni or unis she is interested in, they often have lectures on the UCAS system and Finance that it would be good for you both to attend if possible.

Go on some open days asap - there are many in October - to get a feel of the uni and the area. And yes, she will be able to get a maintenance loan which is means tested.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 28/09/2025 13:25

Her college should be supporting her to set up a UCAS account and work on her personal statement.

she can apply for up to 5 courses.

the deadline for applications is January 14th

Just so you are clear the course fees will usually be around £9.5k a year. Your daughter will get a full student loan to cover these fees. She will then be able to get a maintenance loan towards living costs. Assuming you are in England, on a household income of £50k you would in theory get a maintenance loan currently of £6,779 but this could be more if you have other children under 17. You can check on the student loan calculator on Gov.uk.
In addition you can get the NHS Learning support fund bursary for £5k. You need to apply for this separately to the student loan finance.
Hope this helps and happy to help with any queries If you pm me.

join a couple of the parents groups on Facebook - I found the ‘what I wish I’d knew about uni’ group really good. Just dropped our son off today for his first year ! Also the Martin Lewis website is great on the finances side
