She only communicates with noises. She will laugh like hahaha randomly, she says yeah alot and always has done, says hmm and more recently starting to make S sounds. She hand flaps and does this little bow (very cute)
When she was a baby she wouldn’t look at us, would actively turn her face away, she is a very content and happy little girl and does respond to her name so I don’t think it’s a hearing issue.
She doesn’t follow me pointing and doesn’t point herself.
Do I tell the gp or just wait until her 2 year check ?

Given you already have experience of autism I would contact the GP now if she appears to be unhappy or you feel you can’t meet her needs in some way. Otherwise how long until her 2 year appointment?

BuffaloCauliflower · 28/09/2025 08:28

It might be worth flagging now yes. Autism is highly heritable. Is she in childcare, what do they think? Also is sibling male? Autism can look different in boys and girls (not always but something to be aware of, you probably already are)

Yes, how long is it till her 2 year check?

How old is she? Go to GP and ask for referal to developmental peds, audiology and salt. They may say you should self refer to salt.

Noshadowsinthedark · 28/09/2025 08:31

I would contact the GP for sure.

My DS was referred before he was 2 and it’s still a hell of a wait.

We went through audiology first and while he had some mild glue ear, it wasn’t the cause of his speech delay overall but it was important to rule out.

Hi, yes sibling is male. I do see similarities. She is very contented and quiet exactly how ds was, although I know that isn’t an indicator as such. My middle child did also have a speech delay but she’s come really far now.
Round here we normally get the development checks a couple of months before they are due a birthday, so her two year check I should be getting through soon. She’s 2 in February.

so if she is two in February she’s 18 or 19 months now? Two of mine weren’t even speaking at that age. I would wait.

BunnyRuddington · 28/09/2025 09:21

Ok so if she’s 2 in February is she 20 months now?

I would do the 18 months Social & Emotional Ages & Stages and see how she scores. That’s if she’s in the right age range for the one I linked to. If not let me know and I can put a link in for the next one Smile

It is probably also worth doing this simple progress checker from Speech & Language UK.

Let us know how she scores on both.
