None, I had my record player on at top volume in my bedroom and played what I wanted, they just thought it was all a racket.

EchoedSilence · 28/09/2025 08:09

None.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 28/09/2025 08:11

None.Mine encouraged me by buying my first record player for me when I was nine.

Owly11 · 28/09/2025 08:12

None! What a weird question! Where are you from?

Ohhellnooo · 28/09/2025 08:14

Everything, bar country and Weston and cliff Richard (I was born in 1980).

It was awful. I wasn’t allowed to like anything, or dance to anything or they would either laugh at me and make me feel awful about myself or be annoyed at me.

Weirdly, my mum watched top of the pops everyweek, so knew who bands were and longed to hear more, but couldn’t. I think they only had it on so they could both have something to be outraged about.

I vividly remember being very small, maybe 4 and my mum having to go and lay down from shock when she found out Boy George was male (she was very catholic).

Absolutely fucking bonkers, the pair of them.

None

Anon501178 · 28/09/2025 08:24

My dad banned me from listening to the Red hot chili peppers californication album at about 15/16....I remember it suddenly disappeared from my room and then I found him studying the lyrics booklet 🙈 Although I think I did get it back at some point.

He was a devout roman catholic and very against me accessing anything sexual, although it was pretty extreme to be fair and i probably wouldn't want my DDs listening to it either.

AgnesX · 28/09/2025 08:28

I'm not sure they paid that much attention really although my father toed (with a slippered foot) the Frankie "Relax" single under the record cabinet so that my mother wouldn't see it.

Odd really as she was much more pragmatic about sex as she worked in a gynae clinic.

TheGrimSmile · 28/09/2025 08:35

None. I also find this odd. Are you American, OP?

OneFootintheHedgehog · 28/09/2025 08:36

None. I was into grunge-punk/blues mainly and my dad was an old punk and my mum loved Nirvana, so the idea of them banning me from listening to anything is unfathomable. They occasionally made comments about Marilyn Manson, but they didn’t stop me buying his stuff, and seems they were right about him in the end!

Waitaminutewheresmejumper · 28/09/2025 08:42

None but they weren't thrilled about the Straight Outta Compton album by NWA.

dontforgetme · 28/09/2025 08:49

@CalzoneOnLegs😂😂 this made me laugh!! It really was!

dontforgetme · 28/09/2025 08:54

None. Both my parents are into great music and passed that down to me. Although I do remember being in the car once listening to the radio and my much younger sister was singing along to Rihanna’s Rude Boy, my dad did look at me and change the radio 😂 there was no complaints from me though, I much preferred it when he played his Smiths and Depeche CD’s instead of the radio.

Obeseandashamed · 28/09/2025 09:02

Sugababes freak like me 😬

DemBonesDemBones · 28/09/2025 09:04

None, my Dad is a musician. He’d positively encourage me listening to ‘banned music’ 😆

CalzoneOnLegs · 28/09/2025 10:17

@CalzoneOnLegs😂😂 this made me laugh!! It really was!

I’m all for a sample but that was shocking, I just hope Steve W was well compensated 🤣

Zov · 28/09/2025 10:19

Errrr, none. Does anyone actually do this, ban their DC from listening to certain music? How can you even do that? And what is wrong with Call on Me? Confused

Cocolapew · 28/09/2025 10:20

None, I listened through headphones anyway. My Mum did ask to hear Erotic City by Prince after reading about the lyrics in The Mirror. She wasn't overly impressed but never banned it.

InterestPiqued · 28/09/2025 10:21

None. What kind of draconian upbringing did you have, OP? 🤔

Some parents are fucking weirdos. Mine were. I just wasn’t allowed to listen to anything they didn’t deem appropriate, which wasn’t a lot.

I didn’t have my own money to buy any music anyway, and I didn’t go anywhere but home and school. My mum used to help out at school discos and Christmas parties and I would have to just sit there while all the other children were dancing to music while she embarrassingly told everyone that I only liked country and western music (I hated it with a passion).

Antimimisti · 28/09/2025 10:25

They didn't - they were liberal in that respect and didn't really police my listening, reading or TV viewing.

Julietheknowall · 28/09/2025 10:25

None, I was born in 1973, my parents had no idea what I was doing or listening to half the time.

notacooldad · 28/09/2025 10:27

They didnt ban anything but mum was puzzled why i was listening to music that she was listening to when she was younger. Eg the Kinks, Led zeppelin , Deep purple. Im 60 now and still listen to them as well as up and coming rock/ post punk bands.

same lol but my mum used to moan when I played Smiths, she really disliked his voice :D

See, I wasn’t allowed to listen to music but there were no fucks given about films. My favourite film as a 5 year old was Poltergeist. I was obsessed with the Shining, the Nightmare on Elm Street films.

But if I listened to Kylie and Jason like all the other 8/9 year olds at the time, I would be corrupted. The Omen on a Sunday afternoon in the living room? Yep, bring it on 😳🤣

Dipshits, the pair of them.
