my child needs first adult passport. Their child passport (EU version) expired in 2018.

The info on gov site doesnt make sense as it says you can only apply if you have never had a UK passport before. But when i search google results suggests i need to apply it via the system for first adult passport where it says I cannot as I dont meet criteria of being over 16, British citizen and have not ever had a UK passport before. Im totally confused. is it related to EU vs new blue passports?

Can anyone help? Im not stupid but clearly being thick - that said i've been arguing the toss with said teenager all day so not thinking straight!

Why isn't your adult child doing this? If it expired 7 years ago they would be mid 20s?

ramonaquimby · 27/09/2025 17:46

Sorry that's not much help. One of the DC recently applied for 1st adult passport online via gov U.K.

hoarahloux · 27/09/2025 17:47

really misread lol

Does it mean "never had a UK adult passport before"? As child passports seem to be referred to as a different thing.

When I had a query about the photograph for my late husband's passport photograph, I phoned up the passport office. The gentleman who replied was very helpful.

Was the EU passport a British one? If so I think it counts as renewal.

Sodukuchess · 27/09/2025 17:48

If your child is an adult, I'd be encouraging them to work this out themselves.

There is no such thing as an EU passport as such.

I have two passports because I have dual nationality (British and Italian). I have a an old pre-Brexit British Eu passport which is red and an Italian Eu passport which is also red. When I need to renew my British passport it will be blue.

is your child British? If so then it is irrelevant that thier old passport is red!

When DD's child's passport ran out in the middle of lockdown it wasn't worth renewing, so when she got a new passport a couple of years later the application was treated as a new application.

FiveCustardTarts · 27/09/2025 18:06

It’s a adult renewal they need. Assuming they are British and previously had a British child passport.

it’s only a first adult passport if they’ve never had any passport before, not even as a child.

Use this link. Answer the questions. When it says 'have you had a passport before?' say yes. It will work out that you are needing an adult passport from the date of birth.

Apply online for a UK passport

You can apply for, update, renew or replace a passport online.

My DS did this a few months ago and while it is classed as a first adult Passport when you answer yes to having a previous (child) passport it overrides the need for all the gubbins (proof, counter signature etc)

DS got his back inside a week

I think things must have changed recently because DD had to get a counter signature. There was a gap of a couple of years between the two passports due to lockdown.

DigitalIDisTotalControl · 27/09/2025 22:26

I would go to a post office and get it done and checked in person, rather than trying to navigate it all yourself online.

They fill it all in, take the photo and send it off. It’s their day job, so they are not confused by the process (or shouldn’t be).

dementedpixie · 27/09/2025 22:35

@alwaysthesamechild If they had a child UK passport then it is a renewal even if it will be an adult passport this time.

Do it online. It's faster and cheaper than doing a paper application

Yes I think so. DS's had only run out a couple of months not saying anything about finding out a month before we flew, despite asking him to check
We thought we may need counter signature as he now has a beard
