Advantages of living close to a large city?

I’m moving and I’m currently contemplating a home close to a large UK city. I live in a half rural/half suburb area at the moment and I’m thinking of moving to another town that’s closer to a major city. I don’t drive so the improved public transport will be great. I’ll be 20 minutes by bus and about 6 minutes by train from the city.

I’m also contemplating moving to a small town some 50 miles away which has public transport but it’ll take me about an hour to get to the large city there.

I haven’t lived in a city since I was 9 so I’m contemplating the advantages of staying close to a large city so I’m curious to hear from people who live in or close to a major city and what you love(And loathe) about it.

TIA

If you don't drive than good public transport is vital.

Interesting cultural events

Easy access to medical options

I live on the edge of London which is perfect as far as I’m concerned. All the convenience & friendliness of a small town, with fantastic public transport & all the excitement of a city a short ride away.

I live close to the centre of a small coastal city which has a lot going on culturally, great food and music scene, lots of festivals, and is surrounded by lovely countryside. I adored London when I lived there (on the zone 1/2 border), but this works for me now. I like being able to walk to an arthouse cinema or any number of good pubs on a whim.

I live midway between Bristol and Bath in a market town called Keynsham. It's 10 minutes by train and 20 minutes by bus to either city.
We have a good sense of community. Several events over the year such as a music festival over the course of a week in the summer and a Christmas festival with fairground rides and stalls. The remembrance parade is also well attended.

Thanks all.

I am leaning towards staying close to a major city as it is more practical for me but the coastal small town is tempting too but then I wouldn’t enjoy the benefits of living so close to a major city.

Your comments are really helping so thank you for sharing your opinions.

Some of you sound like you’ve found the perfect compromise. I’d love to do the same.
