She is dyslexic but enjoys reading and storytelling but struggles with the smaller text in books aimed at her reading/understanding level.

We have recently discovered that she loves audiobooks which bridge the gap between her love of reading and how comfortable it is for her to actually sit and read.

So far she has listened to:

The first 3 Harry Potter books but doesn't want to move onto the 'scarier ones' yet

Series 1 - 4 of the radio 4 programme Cabin Pressure - will listen to the rest but also wants something a bit more challenging

The Danger Gang

The Creepers

Quite a bit of Enid Blyton but to my surprise hasn't got into the private school/ Secret Seven/ Famous Five stuff.

She says she likes something with a bit of jeopardy/ danger but not too scary. Something where there are puzzles or a mystery to solve.

Mine both liked Dexter proctor junior doctor, and the funny life of pets.

The Wizards of Once series, Cressida Cowell and read by David Tennant, is great.

we have fact based podcasts but can recommend That’s Just Wild (Steve Backshall) and Greeking Out.

Katherine Rundell?

Butteredtoast55 · 26/09/2025 22:01

I was also going to suggest Katherine Rundell or Catherine Doyle, starting with the Stormkeeper's Island.

My similar sounding daughter (Cabin pressure addict - great choice!) loved listening to:

  • Noel Streatfield books (Ballet Shoes, Curtain up and White Boots).
-Sleepovers (and the rest of the series) by Jacqueline Wilson -Nevermore by Jessica Townsend -Lottie Brooks (by listening to them she had the courage to read them)

My 9 & 11 year olds have recently started listening to ‘Everything Is Alive’, a podcast of interviews with inanimate objects. Louis, a can of cola, was a big favourite. I’ve listened to most of them myself and it’s an incredible series.

For example, the host interviews Louis, the can of cola. He describes how it feels to be to be dropped or shaken up, being a ‘mid-range’ cola, and the agony of being taken out of the fridge to be drank, only to not be drank (it will make you pause every time you do the same after listening to it, honestly!) The interview with Atsuko, a set of bagpipes, also features a brief interview with Queen Elizabeth's actual piper at Balmoral about how he would play each morning for her.

You might want to give some a listen yourself first but out of the ones I’ve heard there’s nothing that would worry me about your 9 year olds listening.

On Audible - Rachel McAdams reading Anne of Green Gables. My dd loved it.

Marcus Rashford books on audible

Thanks all I think we will give all of these a try.

I LOVED the shoe books/ Noel Streatfeild as a child, and Anne of Green Gables so hopefully she will get into them too. Don't know why I didn't think of them.

She picked 'Everything is Alive' to start with and seems to be enjoying it so far.

What do the kids listen to podcasts on?

I have an audible subscription and a Spotify subscription. She tends to listen to them on her tablet or via alexa.
