Anyone living in London?

I saw a job in London for 24,500 pounds.

I haven't applied for the job yet. But, if my salary is 24,500- i will get 1763 pounds. Is that ok to live in London? I am looking for a house very close to my workplace if offered the role.
I was wondering - if I don't apply for it, someone else will apply for this job and the organisation will definitely hire someone else. So, it must be possible to live on that wage, right? I don't really need to be out every weekend. I am someone who prefers staying indoors. So, even if my rent and bills come to 900 pounds a month, I will have over 800 pounds left. Is this not ok?
Currently, I live in the North of England.

It’s not enough. My DS is starting as a grad on £30k and there’s not a hope he can move out of home

That’s not true. If you have family house you think moving out is impossible, if you don’t have parents in London you have not option but to live somewhere else. It’s perfectly doable! You just have to be very careful with money (like I was!) it’s only a couple of years ago but I was on far less than your son and still could afford a flat share, food, bills, some small socialising

It is the salary for term time hours.
Thank you for your suggestions about the flat shares 😊 xx

Sorry, I can see you had said that while I was typing my message Blush
No problem. Ilford is OK; personally I do prefer Romford, as I think the town centre is a bit nicer & there's more green space, but Valentines Park in Ilford is lovely & you aren't too far from Hainault Forest & Fairlop Waters.
Ilford is a bit "gritty" but other parts of Redbridge (the Borough its in) are very nice - its an interesting Borough to work in as there's quite a wide disparity. Its on the Elizabeth line though so easy access to central London for exploring on your days off.

Please register with recruitment agents such as: Tiger Recruitment, Angela Mortimer and Joyce Guinness to find MUCH better admin jobs even entry level ones will pay more than that in nicer areas of London.

Thank you so much 🩷 YOU are a STAR! XX

Aside from the really high rents which others have pointed out, just keep in mind that so many things you may take for granted - like buying a sandwich or a coffee, not to mention going out for a beer or wine - are more expensive. One glass of wine and a pint of beer is heading towards £20.

It’s not going to sound very PC:

Smarten yourself up: look groomed and confident in your manner. Get chat gpt to pimp your CV.

I’m not sure how old you are but a west end office admin would get way more than £24k. Even start off on reception or front of house. Work inconvenient hours. If you have excellent presentation and attention to detail, you’ll be fine.

I don't think it's enough for London. It also sounds like it's not even the minimum wage for most decent companies as there should be a London uplift? My son started working in London a couple of years ago spending nearly 1K per month on shared accommodation, the cheapest he could find. But his salary was more than double that and whilst he could live ok he didn't have lots spare really.

Ah, down here jobs in schools are very very popular - esp with parents ! and even more esp with parents with children in that actual school !

I feel there could be enough local people applying that the school / LA / Academy may not short list you.

If you’re not needing to just work term time have a look for admin jobs in other industries! You will get a higher starting salary than that! Good luck ☺️

If you don’t need term time hours and you’re after an admin job in east London it’s worth looking at receptionist roles in the city or canary wharf. Salaries are more like £35k plus free lunch, uniform allowance etc. If you’d be qualified as an EA those salaries are more like £45-50k+ but those roles can be much harder to get so a receptionist role can be a good way in.

I agree with PPs – there will be full-time ie not term-time-only admin roles in London which pay a lot more than that. The reason the salary is lowish is bc it is pro-rata – and as others say, these jobs suit parents and can be quite sought-after.

If you are an admin whizz and well presented, there's no reason why you couldn't go for a fulltime/48 week (four weeks' hol) admin role where you would earn a lot more, since you don't have DC so you don't need the holidays off.

Agree – East London house share and a role in the city would perhaps be better. Is there a reason you are looking in London – is it somewhere you particularly want to live? It's a great city (some say the best city) with lots of opportunities but it also costs a lot to live there. Lots of activities are free but also lots of things you might want to do cost quite a bit so you need to bear that in mind.

Why on earth not? My first job in London in 2000 was £12k which is the equivalent of £19k now. House share with 5 others (all lawyers) in Zone 2. Had the time of my life.

If you mean can’t afford his own pad in Zone 1.. well yes but 30k for London for a grad is easy to get by on on a house share.

fancytoes · 20/10/2025 15:02

How did you get on, @Waterdrinker?

StrongandNorthern · 20/10/2025 15:07

I think you'd really struggle (sorry).
