do you do that in real life?

Yes I do because noone can see in (I hope) and I like the idea of being gradually woken by the dawn light. But then I'm not a morning person so any help to get going in the morning is appreciated.

Why does a partner sleep on the couch after an argument, when the house has at least one guest bedroom if not multiple.

AlexandraJJ · 25/09/2025 19:56

I don’t bother closing blinds/curtain either haven’t for years

JetFlight · 25/09/2025 21:15

I also prefer the curtains open. And the windows. Love the night sky and sounds.

SeaToSki · 25/09/2025 21:22

Most New England Americans I know dont have curtains (they call them drapes) that work. Mostly blinds (shades) if anything and those are light filtering rather than blackout. I have always though it was weird that my friends didnt close them at night, but in general around here, the houses are further apart and set back further from the street than in the UK. I also dont think that around here there is as much of a privacy concern, hedges and privacy fences around the edge of a property are also much less common. I cant speak for the rest of America though, its a big place with lots of different customs.

Foundationns · 25/09/2025 21:32

I assumed it was so we could believably watch them sleeping.

DareDevil223 · 25/09/2025 21:34

I've seen Salem's Lot and I'm taking no chances...

SecretNameforMN · 25/09/2025 21:37

I dont have curtains on my bedroom window.

flippyflopss · 25/09/2025 22:05

I dont have curtains i have funky colour nets in each room.
I cant sleep with curtains closed or windows shut tight fuck that.
Been like it all my life even as a child hated being closed in.

And no i dont lose sleep.

I’m an American. We don’t have any curtains in our home. We have blinds in some rooms (but not all). We sleep with the blinds open. I like being able to see outside when I wake. No one can see into our house.

ShesTheAlbatross · 25/09/2025 22:58

Interesting. I really do not think I could sleep with the curtains open. It’s like how I can’t sleep with a foot out of the duvet (in case a monster grabs it of course) - it’s a feeling vulnerable/exposed thing that I wouldn’t like.

Yes, we always sleep with the curtains open. I hate feeling closed in. We very rarely close the curtains as we're not overlooked.

But you surely know you are being watched/stalked/about to be murdered.
I cant believe people do this. I can't bear a chink of light.

Me too.
This is more strange than finding out about not having kettles.

BretonStripe · 25/09/2025 23:12

I gave up watching the thriller series You very early on as the big bay window with the shutters/blinds always open bothered me so much.

Can't get over all these utter weirdos sleeping with all blinds and curtains open! But I grew up on a busy council estate with bright street lamps outside, so always shut the curtains at night (plus doing that keeps the heat in during winter).

Smidge001 · 25/09/2025 23:49

I like to sleep with the curtains open (I'm english not american). I like light, and it doesn't stop me from sleeping. I certainly don't wear eye masks etc - I could sleep at any time of day or night as long as I'm close to horizontal! Shutting my eyes makes it plenty dark enough Grin

Couldn't you doze off on the sofa after a big lunch? (if you happen to have no work or chores to do..)

Breathmiller · 26/09/2025 00:12

I don't have any window dressings on my bedroom window. I like sleeping with the night sky visible but I do live rurally, only fields and hills out there. Sometimes its a bright moon and the stars are visible and other nights its just dark and you see the outline of the hills. I love waking in the morning to the sunrise. I generally sleep very well. (I would usually be fast asleep by now but I have been ill today and slept during the day).
I grew up with curtains and when I went back to stay at my late mother's house she had blinds and thick lined curtains, I found it very oppressive and discombubulating in the morning.

Nah, I live in the middle of nowhere. Nobody's watching, stalking or planning to murder me. There are no street lights, no noise etc.

But even when I lived in a town I still left the curtains open. Window open all year round as well, unless it's subzero outside.

mathanxiety · 26/09/2025 02:47

I'm in the US and close my blinds as my bedroom faces east and there's a street light outside. I like a dark bedroom.

People where I live generally don't close curtains or blinds in downstairs rooms in the evenings.

How do you know that for certain? We have floral film on the top window of our house. I didn't think the neighbors could see in or anything. But late one night I was on the back deck and as I turned the corner, saw a drone hovering right next to that window!

Honestly, if someone is willing to go to those lengths, they're welcome to the eyeful.

Beenwhereyouareagain · 26/09/2025 04:09

American here; ever since having a peeping Tom when I was first married I can't sleep if there's even a small gap not covered by shades. Then 5 years ago I came around the house to find a drone hovering beside an upstairs window. It lingered for several minutes until I moved into the light.

The windows must be covered!
