Stolen from garden - what would be the outcome?

Had skateboard stolen from outside our house. Not expensive skateboard
Got video evidence.
If the police know who this is, what is likely to be the outcome/what is likely to happen?
Does anyone know?

Absolutely nothing

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 25/09/2025 16:48

Well who stole it?

Overtheatlantic · 25/09/2025 16:51

They will hopefully arrest him. If he admits to stealing and returns it to you then that’s the end of it. If he denies it then the police build a case against him and hopefully it goes to court and if he’s found guilty then he’s fined and has to pay you back.

I can't imagine a lot you would be better sorting it yourself put it on local Facebook see if anyone recognises him

Overtheatlantic · 25/09/2025 16:55

Just to add, it takes a long time to get something like this to court. It happened to me and it was worth it because my neighbour was a massive bully and I wanted him to have a criminal record for the theft and subsequent denial under oath.

GrandHighPoohbah · 25/09/2025 16:55

Based on my own experience, probably nothing. We had two expensive bikes stolen from our locked bike shed, and the police weren't interested. They gave us a crime number but otherwise didn't appear to care less.

I would pop the video evidence on Facebook on your local page , ask people to keep an eye out for the skateboard as it might turn up dumped somewhere . As above though I very much doubt the police will do anything ( that’s not slating them , just honestly I would assume they have bigger issues to deal with than a cheaper skateboard that’s been left unattended in a garden ) .

purpleme12 · 25/09/2025 17:30

It's not an immediate neighbour
I don't know who it is personally
i didn't have high hopes no.I logged a claim after a couple of people mentioned I should because then the police have records of crimes in the area and because the police might know the person anyway and because if this person does it again then it's another thing to add to the record.
The neighbourhood police have said they think they know who it is and would like to take a statement now.

So was just wondering what would come of it

Nothing. If thugs can walk into shops and steal £100 worth of jumpers and walk out without being arrested, then a skateboard likely won’t have anything done.

Overtheatlantic · 25/09/2025 17:42

Mine was a doorbell but the theft was caught on cctv so the police were happy to build a case and present it to the Crown Prosecution.

Aaron95 · 25/09/2025 17:50

Nothing will happen. If you call them they won't even attend. Unless someone has broken into your house they will give you a crime number and that will be all.

purpleme12 · 25/09/2025 17:53

The police person has asked when is convenient to visit to take a statement so it's got that far at the minute

Well hopefully they will know who it is, and they can go round there and repossess your property for you.

If they don't know, they can add it to a list of unsolved crimes and it could be of help to the police in the future.

purpleme12 · 30/09/2025 20:38

Update.

Police officer took statement.
Said he was a druggie who lived in the next estate.
Said he would arrest him and hopefully get it back.
Then emailed to say he did arrest him. He admitted the offence (although he did say the video was so good you'd be able to tell it's him)
BUT he said he couldn't find the skateboard in the property and he couldn't compensate us because he was homeless
So disappointed that we haven't been able to get it back or the money for it

He is going to court in October
I don't know what the outcome of this is likely to be?
Does anyone know?
