Lodgers. The good. Bad, Ugly

Husband and I are in the extremely fortunate position of owning a flat in Spain. He is doubly lucky to have an Irish passport, so no real limitation on the amount of time he can spend there.
I am able to go for 90 days at a time.
In order to help with our English mortgage, I am considering trying to get a lodger or house mate.
Obviously I have looked into the legalities but am looking for insights from people who have done it.
I am 61, so it would be me and the dog.

Would you consider Airbnb as an option for your British home whilst you are living out of the country? House is occupied, money is accrued but you don't need to bump into anyone in the hall.

I would do whatever I could to avoid living with a stranger, to the point of selling the second home, if needed. It seems a contradiction in terms to be wealthy enough to have a second home but poor enough to need a lodger.

Or are you seeking a lodger for company? In which case my point above is moot.

I used to love having a lodger, my longest stayed three years and his dog and mine were besties (and meant that we shared the dog walking duties!).

Don't have too many rules – it's their home as well as yours – but be clear on the non negotiables, such as noise, guests, bills and food. Always have a 2 or 4 week probationary period when either side can call time for no reason.

Aren't you able to stay for longer, given your husband has an EU passport (lucky thing)?

To answer some questions.
I don't really want to Airbnb it, I don't think the neighbours would appreciate it.
Currently in the midst of trying to hitch myself to his residency.
Money isn't the incentive but it could be used to cover part of the rent for our DD at university.
