Curly girls - which curl cream that doesn’t make your hair look wet and feel stiff?

As above. I’m using cantu in the orange tub and although it’s lovely and moisturising and leaves my curls defined, I find it leaves them crunchy and looking like they are wet. Not a good look.

anything else you can recommend? I’m new to embracing the curls so don’t know which products are best.

Have you tried breaking the cast? A little bit of oil on your hand, rub them together and gently scrunch your curls.

Pinkflower100 · 24/09/2025 17:22

So after applying the curl cream?

You need the last stage of releasing the cast.

I put a few drops of Percy and Reed serum in my hands and scrunch through. Any hair oil will do.

justasoul · 24/09/2025 17:27

Yes, once your hair is completely dry, you scrunch it up gently to break the cast. I like to use a little bit of hair oil as it helps keep any frizz under control and makes it shiny.

Only curls stuff is the only products I've found that doesn't make my hair frizzy.
They also have very helpful short tutorials on their website.

Agree about scrunching out the cast, but I personally don't find oil to be necessary.

I was coming to say Only Curls Hydrating Curl Creme, but it looks like more knowledgeable people than I am have good advice! I never knew about using oil to break the cast after it's dried, so I'm glad I read this thread

cestlavielife · 24/09/2025 17:30

I like holy curl cream

Hatty65 · 24/09/2025 17:41

I had some fabulous Orange Marmalade cream from Ecoslay that I absolutely loved. I highly recommend - it's a bit pricey but you can order it online.

Not everyone uses oil but I seem to be fairly electrically charged 😂it doesn't help with the frizz so a bit of oil sorts that.

I have recently bought JVN's Air Dry Cream (because I'm too lazy to diffuse most of the time) and I really like it, it doesn't seem to form a cast but I don't use a lot, certainly not as much as the amount of gel I would normally use.

Pinkflower100 · 24/09/2025 18:14

I see! Tomorrow I will apply a little hair oil and scrunch once it’s dry. Fingers crossed it will do the trick. Thanks all!

I use Novex. Comes in a kilo tub. The boys in my form-3 curly haired lads-were warning me off Cantu today, but I’d already dumped it. The first ingredient in it is alcohol, so long term very bad for hair. It also gave me really bad except on my hands this summer, maybe the heat? Took ages to get rid of. De plus, the stuff in the tub flakes off like I had major dandruff! Shame, because it smells fab.

Edit: who has time to wait til hair is dry to add oil/break the cast (never heard this expression before but it’s good!)? I put product on wet hair, do breakfast/make up, leave for work.

justasoul · 24/09/2025 20:53

@Cherrysoup I do have short hair at the moment so dries much quicker than it used to. I normally wash mine in the evening so it's dry before bed, then I break the cast in the morning. Saves me a refresh too (I said I was lazy...)

Do you wear a silk cap or anything over it? Mine is a mess in the morning no matter how much product is on it. Mine's shoulder length, extremely curly.

NippyNinjaCrab · 24/09/2025 21:06

I use only curls oil to finish off if my hair has an extra crispy cast, I dont scrunch though, I pull my hair like milking it. It's the only way mine stays good. Try Curlsmith it's fab for products. For me anyway, everyone is different. I find a curl cream is too heavy for my hair, I use Flora and Curl mousse then either Curlsmith souffle gel or Umberto Gianni x

justasoul · 24/09/2025 21:09

I do have a silk bonnet thingy but don't always wear it - been thinking about getting a pillowcase instead to see if it's any good.
My hair is like this (I'm not this pretty though 😁)

Cantu does smell amazing and has really moisturised my hair in the week I’ve been using it but it does leave it looking a bit greasy. I might be using too much. I tried the oil this morning and it’s mostly worked. I will keep going with it as it’s early days and I’ve only been embracing the curls for a couple of weeks. I just can’t get used to not having straight hair that I can run a brush through!

I have should length ringletty curls and don’t use any curl cream… I just use cheap Argan shampoo/conditioner then Shock Waves gel and hairspray. Leave for 15 mins then dry with a hairdryer - perfect curls 😊

At night I use hair pins to pin the curls to my head so the next morning I can take them out and have perfect curls for another few days. They aren’t comfy to sleep in but it’s worth it to have great hair (and the compliments I get!)

Sheknowsaboutme · 25/09/2025 21:30

I use only curls gel and then once dry, Olew hair oil to break cast

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 25/09/2025 21:58

I like these products, I use a leave in conditioner and then the jelly, leave it for a bit and then scrunch it.
