Please give me some reasonable explanations of this weird experience today?

I left my house and didn't see a single person in my road, only cars but I couldn't hear them. This in itself is unusual as it's a cut through road to a busy main road with shops and leads to A roads, there's always someone outside and you can often hear chatter. Everything was silent. I put it down to EV cars having not heard vehicle noise and didn't think much more of it.

I was driving for the school run and again, no one walking along the roads, they were unusually empty apart from the people in cars, driving them and even then there was no traffic which is unusual. I couldn't hear any road noise and had to check I could hear by turning the radio on (which I could hear). Got out of the car when I parked and I panicked that I was extremely late. You can always hear the kids or parents at pick up time and there's always someone else walking along the road at that time. I couldn't hear a thing. If there weren't people driving cars, I'd have thought I'd missed a world event today whilst at home.

Got into the school gates and it was quieter than usually but it was like a 'click' of noise from the school as soon as I walked into the playground itself and as soon as we got out (5 minutes after let out as DC was busy doing something before coming out but there were others still in the playground and walking home), the noise stopped again and all I could hear was DC talking. There was one other woman and child but they weren't talking to each other anyway.

Got in the car, and thankfully DC was chatting away as, by this time, everything felt really eery. I went to McDonald's Drive Thru to get a coffee and it was dead. The car parks for surrounding shops had cars parked in them but no one walking outside. No background noise at all. I heard the person on the speaker and when I got to the window, could hear the noise in McDonald's but when they closed the windows, everything was silent again.

Got home and DH was home earlier than usual, we all went inside and I've heard a car or two go by since but no people and the doorbell camera hasn't picked up a single soul this evening.

I know it sounds absolutely bonkers but I'm sitting here scratching my head as to what it is I've experienced?

There is no easy way to say this. This could be a symptom of a brain tumour. I would make an appointment with your GP as soon as possible.

That doesn’t explain why there were no people around, walking to/from their cars and in and out of the shops.

I don't mean to state the obvious, but there were definitely people around. People don't just disappear like that.
A severe health condition like the one I mentioned could have had an impact on the subjects sensorial capabilities.

Sounds like Mary from Carnival of Souls.

The law of coincidence, you just missed busy times. Had you passed the supermarket two minutes earlier lots of people would have been going in, etc. I have odd days, every other person seems to be carrying a brown paper parcel or an umbrella on a sunny day. Just coincidences. But you could get your hearing checked!

Putneydad7 · 23/09/2025 19:39

I get polystyrene balls from an old bean bag chair and when my wife is sleeping I get a pair of tweezers and put them in her ears. The results are hilarious. Maybe your DH is twisted too.

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/09/2025 20:01

I remember some years ago something similar and frankly it was spooky!

No cars, no people, nothing. It was like a scene from a post apocalypse film.

Called at the local shop and the woman there said it was so quiet that day.

Then on my way home, it was just as normal, so perhaps it was just that everyone in the village decided to have a lie in!

I think it is just one of those weird things that can happen but when its written down sounds so contrived that it couldnt possibly be what it is, ie a coincidence.

Bowling4soup · 23/09/2025 20:20

Was there a big school trip or something going on which would explain why school pick up was quiet maybe?

Efrogwraig · 23/09/2025 20:21

It's meant to be "the Rapture" today. Maybe your neighbourhood was chosen?

FlyingUnicornWings · 23/09/2025 20:42

Really weird OP. The hearing on its own can be explained by some of the other posters. But the combination of that and your perception of people (or lack of them) is incredibly odd.

I’d be inclined to say it might be worth checking in with your GP.

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/09/2025 20:59

Why does it have to be explained away by a medical issue the op has?

Maybe she just went out in a five minute period where there were hardly any people about?

It happens!

Silence, well yes that will be because of the lack of cars and people.

She hasnt got a tumour, there hasnt been a Rapture (or if there has, no MNers were picked, big surprise!) it was just a coincidence!

Is it still on our has it been cancelled? It's getting a bit late and I need to go to bed. Don't want to miss it though.

AgentPidge · 23/09/2025 22:33

Yesterday we had a power cut from 9.15 until 5.15. It affected the local town and several villages. It was supposed to be back on by 11 so I waited in so I could have a shower... Then had lunch... Then just didn't go out! (I did a lot of cleaning!) I wonder if it could be that?

Not sure. Still midday in the midwest so... Go to bed, l think you've not been chosen. (sorry)

mysoulmio · 23/09/2025 22:38

Ive got covid at the moment and everything sounds really muffled.

TheWelshposter · 23/09/2025 22:52

Like others have said, the Rapture was going to be today according to American Christians. Maybe all the people in your area were the chosen ones and we've been left behind. 😱

miserableandworried · 24/09/2025 00:01

You found a glitch in the matrix

wwyd2021medicine · 24/09/2025 00:04

I think this just seems to happen sometimes.
I have been really freaked out on walks when I have literally seen no one at all and no cars in my suburb and wondered if the queen had died or I was the only person not to know something. Also happened on my drive to work when for no reason, the roads were virtually empty. I had to check with radio stations that I hadn't missed a clock change or a nuclear attack.
It is so so weird

recipientofraspberries · 24/09/2025 00:55

Go and get checked for things like seizures, tumours etc. It's probably not! But that would be the wisest thing to do, just in case.

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 24/09/2025 15:48

I am currently sitting in a London pub. When I arrived about 10 minutes ago there was no one here apart from the barman. I ordered my drink & came on here now there are about 20 people in the pub! Were they all hiding? It’s quite bizarre that I happened to click on your thread. Feeling unsettled 😳
