Son wants to do park run the day after foot surgery

Tbh this operation has been one nightmare after another.

ds2 is 17 and has autism. He is finally getting his infected ingrown toenail sorted out under general anaesthetic in 2 months time after waiting nearly a year. Dh is going to be away with work so the timing isn't great and I'm worried ds will have a meltdown at the hospital. He has refused all reasonable adjustments and now he wants to do park run the day after his operation. He is supposed to be off college for 2 weeks and no sport for 4 weeks. He doesn't really feel pain so i can't assume that post op pain will put him off. FIL is encouraging him to do park run anyway against medical advice which really isn't helping.

make sure the surgeon knows. Even if it isn’t unbearably painful once the local wears off and even if he can get a sensible shoe on over the dressing, the chances of getting a really nasty infection in the wound might be so high that it makes the risks of doing the surgery higher than the risk of not doing it and therefore postponing until he feels in a better position to follow the post-op instructions may be more sensible.

he's unlikely to be able to get his trainers on let alone run parkrun! Maybe sign him up a for a volunteering role he can do sitting down if needed?

Thank you. He will have one of those walking boot things that people with broken legs have and he thinks he will be able to do the park run wearing that.

Park run is his obsession. We broke down once and he was having a meltdown because he couldn't get to park run.

I know a number of people who are parkrun obsessives. Most would use something like this as an opportunity to take a volunteer role that day. Is that not an option? Maybe explain it as this way he still gets to "do" parkrun, whereas if he goes intending to run he might not.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 22/09/2025 12:22

Doesn't sound like you can persuade him otherwise, so Let him. He won't get far, will he.

Twistedfirestarters · 22/09/2025 12:25

As a previous poster suggests, could he or would he volunteer? How well do you know the organisers? Could you get one of them to speak to him?

LIZS · 22/09/2025 12:47

I suspect when it comes to it the post GA effects and pain will deter him.

stokiemum62 · 22/09/2025 12:49

can you explain to his surgeon that is planning to do this and get them to emphasise what a bad idea this is and how it could delay his overall recovery.

elliejjtiny · 22/09/2025 19:23

Thank you. He does volunteer quite often but he will always do something that will allow him to run as well. I will speak to the surgeon. As he doesn't feel pain, that won't stop him running. He has been running for over a year with both big toes bright red, very swollen and leaking pus. I have to check his feet regularly as he won't tell me if there is a problem.
