Doctors or experience? 4yo rectal prolapse!

CaseyMay91 · 21/09/2025 17:57

So my doctors is 4 and ever since we started potty training her from 2 yo, she’s suffered with a rectal prolapse.

We first noticed this when we started potty training her and a small red mass was showing from her rectum after a bowel movement. We went straight to a&e and by the time we got there it had gone back in. We were referred to paediatrician as it happened several times after that, and she just advised Movicol and a high fibre diet - which my daughter has anyway. She’s a very good eater.

Since then it happens every few months but we manage it and she can get it back in herself within in moments by just sitting down and relaxing.

However it’s now happening more than ever, with it happening 5 times this month alone - 3 being this weekend! My daughter has just started reception and I’m worrying all day that she will need the toilet and it happen at school without me being there to help her as she does get quite upset when this happens.

I will be calling my doctor tomorrow to get advice and hopefully be referred back to the paediatrician. I was told that this would all resolve itself but this is the most it’s happened in a short space of time.

My daughter is otherwise fit and healthy.

Has anyone got any advice or experience and help me out here, as I’m at my wits end with worry :(

Isnt it a haemorrhoid rather tgan a rectal prolapse?

CaseyMay91 · 22/09/2025 12:03

No, she has been diagnosed with a small bowel prolapse :(

My daughter had the same aged 2. She was prescribed Movicol and we were told to use as much as it took to get her poo 'porridgey'. Luckily that seemed to rectify the situation, although she is now on a maintenance dose of Lactulose everyday. Your poor DD definitely needs some help by the sounds of it.

Thank you!

We did also rectify the situation too, but since starting school it has now made everything worse! She’s not able to take her Movicol at the usual time because of school so that’s sort of played things up. She also has to have the school lunches which is things like, jacket potato, chips, pizza, pasta just stodgy things that isn’t helping. I’ve asked if I can bring her home for lunch so she can take her Movicol and have a better lunch that will help her, so I’m hoping they will agree.

My daughter also had this at around age 2. Initially we were prescribed movical and shown how to reinsert the prolapse manually but when she was three she had a minor op - I think it was something like botox injected into the muscle which solved the problem and she has never had a problem since (she is now 14). This can be treated but you need to see the right paediatrician.

I was very worried about the surgery and we waited until she was 3 because I was concerned re the general aesthetic. However its not 'surgery' as such that she needed, it was just an injection in that area to help the muscle. As I said above it solved her problem immediately and was worth it for us. I hope your daughter is sorted soon too.

Why can’t she take her movicol at school? I’ve given children movical during the school day as a teacher before now. Have school refused? Will she not take it? Why does she have to have school lunches? Is that a school policy?

BingBongMerrilyWithPie · 18/12/2025 12:13

I can't help on the big stuff but with the nuts and bolts side, eating breakfast (& movicol) earlier before school might help. Give her longer for her gastrocolic reflex to work after breakfast so she can poo at home before school. Can her movicol be concentrated into just times she is at home?

Maybe try to use the time over the hols to adjust her schedule to be more school friendly. The autonomic nervous system is quite powerful and you can manage a lot more with a solid routine than many people realise. It helps if the child understands what you're trying to do. Get her into a new routine built around movicol and poo all happening at home, where she is more comfortable.

Does she have an IHP? If not does she need one, and if she has one, does it need reviewing?

She needs a paediatric surgeon, not a paediatrician.

Yes ... your description is exactly what it looked like and I think sclerotherapy was the name! It was over 10 years ago so I had forgotten what it was called. The prolapse happened every single time she opened her bowels and we had to manually replaced it every single time. So she had the injection and not a single problem since.

dammit88 · 19/12/2025 09:32

The 'surgery' itself was low risk - it's not surgery in the traditional sense that nothing was cut or sewn up - it was just the injected treatment. The risks as I understood it were to do with having the general anaesthetic which is why we waited until she was 3 years old.

dammit88 · 19/12/2025 09:34

Happy to answer any questions you might have but it really was quite straightforward in the end ... I was so worried before she had it but for her it was definitely the right thing to do.

Just stick it in her water bottle.

Yes it looked as you describe. If you google it there are a few images/ drawings which are exactly as I remember my daughters. She was treated at Southampton General Hospital.

Jancar · 21/12/2025 09:50
