Tooth crown.. is it failing?

Has anyone had a crown fail? Mine is only a year old and it’s been sensitive brushing it for a few weeks but as of last night it’s throbbing like a bitch.

Back story.. it’s a non root canalled first molar with no tooth behind it.. no teeth actually. Lost 12 to atypical face pain. I also have central sensitisation a neurological condition that fires my nerves making any pain far worse than it really is.

Is There a way to know if it’s failing?
Tooth in front is mostly filling and is also in its way to a crown 🤦🏻‍♀️

I've not had a crown fail (yet!) But have also lost 5 teeth to atypical trigeminal neuralgia and am currently in the grip of horrible facial pain again... possibly due to a tooth needing a root canal (which will no doubt cause more pain even when that nerve is removed) so lots of sympathy.

You defonitely need a dentist to check it over. It might be pulpitis in which case removing the crown and the nerve might sort it. Are you are any meds for the central nerve pain? I'm permanently on Gabapentin (as also have other neurological issues) and when facial pain strikes I whack up the doses rapidly to take the edge off (with GP's permission I might add!)

I’m sorry you have similar to me.
Im on gabapentin, amitriptyline, Lamotrigine , tramadol and Mirabegron for a bladder condition.

It’s so hard to tell what it is and my dentist is a skilled dentist but only really sees me as having very sensitive nerves.

I don’t know if it’s failing, if the tooth next door is going as that’s close to needing a crown too.

Do I even bother trying to save more and just get dentures? I have no back teeth left at all.

I’m struggling to find a specialist who understands central nervous system pain.

Self diagnosed where every pain I have is tenfold to what it should be and only reacts to amitriptyline over any other pain killer.
Neurologist diagnosed facial pain but he wasn’t very good at listening.. his notes ended up not matching much of what I’d said.

I have endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, spinal stenosis and cervical radiculopathy and 2 large ovarian cysts to deal with.

You poor thing!
I'm also on Amitriptyline, and naproxen, but the gabapentin helps the most.
I have arthritis in my back and his, myoclonus and ataxia ...and a knackered rotator cuff. I think if I was a horse I'd have been shot by now😅

Would a bridge be an option or are there no teeth left that side to anchor it to? I have a bridge anchored from my canine to my one back tooth, but previous to that I had a Valplast flexible denture... it was great, but I managed to lose it, so went for an unloseable option!

I HATE that I have lost teeth to trigeminal neuralgia!!! And of course the facial pain which is the worst. I'm currently drugged to the eyeballs to be able to function with it so you really do have my empathy!!!

I’m sure I have tn2 but but the medications are the same for that and face pain so I can’t argue it.
How much gabapentin do you take?
My old gynae used to tell me if I was a horse I would’ve have been shot by now.. that was before the 13 surgeries she did and botched me up.

i don’t have any teeth at the back. I only have the front 9 on top and bottom.. others all removed by my last dentist.. nhs. I’m now private.

Typically the pain has eased a lot today.. maybe it was my brain pain as I call it.
I think fibromyalgia could be something else I have. Joint problems fingers, knees, hips etc.

My gp doesn’t have much input into my conditions. Mostly paid for a private consult to recommend meds and then moved those meds to nhs.

Currently I'm taking 900mg a day (in three 300mg doses). When it's less painful I drop the dose ..sometimes down as low as 200 mg a day, but have never been able to stop taking it entirely. When I first developed TN I was on HUGE doses ..2,700mg a day (I was on Carbamazepine initially but it made me vomit) then gradually tapered down once under control a bit better. My GP is happy for me to adjust the dose as needed.

Oucht · 23/09/2025 11:11

I’m on 2400mg gabapentin, 800mg x3 a day. Lamotrigine 400mg and amitriptyline 75mg with tramadol as I need it but I have a high tolerance to it.

When I get things flare up I feel a bit stuck with no way to get out of it apart from wait it out.
